looking for a new video card around $150.....

im looking to for a new video card around $150, some that would be nice for gaming. Ive been looking at the radaeon and the voodoo 5500, but i dont want to get something that no longer has support. any suggestions? thanx in advance

I say pay 50 bucks more and get the geforce 2 gts pro. I HATE voodoo.. and I heard the gts out performs the Radeon.

if you just want a vid card for plain gaming, then i would suggest the geforce2 gts (the pro if you can afford it). the regular gts 32 should be enough for your needs though. i have the radeon, and while it's not quite as fast as the gts, it has more features like the industry's best dvd playback and better overall 32bit performance.

Gotta agree with the Radeon suggestions. Speedwise, a GTS will beat it, but if you play in 32 bit color, at higher resolutions, the Radeon will keep up, or sometimes even pass a GTS. Although a GTS is still probably a better all around pure-gaming card.

But the Radeon gives you hardware dvd, better image quality for both 2D and 3D, and to top it off, it's usually less expensive than the GF2.

Unless raw speed is your primary goal, the Radeon is probably the best all around card, especially for the money.

32 meg DDR Radeon. Prices online are approaching $100. This is the best bang for the buck videocard.
32 meg GeForce 2 GTS
64 meg Radeon. The retail version is clocked at 183Mhz versus 166Mhz for the oem {white box} version.

The Radeon is the most feature rich card currently available. The GeForce 2 GTS has better win2000 drivers.

As for a Voodoo 5 I highly suggest you stay away from it kil45. The reason for that is 3dfx went t1ts up on December 15. A lot of Voodoo 5 owners I've seen online are dumping their V5's since isn't as fast or feature rich as GeForce 2's and Radeons.

it sounds like everybody is lovin the radeon, so ill probably go with that. the only thing thats really stopping me is that ive heard of problems with the radeon in windows ME. also, is the geforce gts ddr? ill probably get the 32 meg radeon, but how much does a 64 meg usually run for? thanx once again

What about the Hercules 3D Propet 4500 64MB? Based on the KyroII chip - it competes with cards that cost three times as much! Check out a review of the tile architecture technology, the chip, and the card here The card should be available in about a month for $149.

Pricewatch shows you can get a GeForce2 GTS Pro for $169. Pretty damn good if you ask me.

The Hercules 3D Prophet 4500 64MB performance is better than a GeForce 2 MX and worse than a GeForce 2 GTS. Another tragic case of too little too late.

The Kryo looks interesting, but I'd wait for more detailed reviews - driver stability might be an issue, and some games just don't like the PowerVr driver set.

You can get an MX for 100 bucks at Best buy now.

watch out for that pro on pricewatch if it's the eVGA card i wouldn't get it my friend just picked one up and we've been having serious problems with it. Spend a little more money and get a better brand, generally though there isn't much difference between manufacturers. I'd stay away from that card though.

"hey, what does a Radeon VE have or not have compared to the regular 32MB Radeon?" The VE has dual monitor support. Since the VE has one rendering pipeline and no T&L engine it is real slow as compared to the regular Radeon which has 2 pipelines and a T&L engine.

Hello

a word of caution.. radeon and other ati cards (which i happen to love) have driver issues. If you want plug and pray happiness go with an invidia gforce 2 gts 32 meg will do. If you experience problems upgrade your 4 in 1 driver (agp) and then if still issues step down to 2x. I just went thru this at work. Ati cards are great but the drivers leave a lot to be desired. I also just purchaSED a gforce 2 mx 32 meg and it is great and price is cheaper but the card is also slower than the 2 gts.

yeah, i got a radeon aiw and a soundblaster 5.1 live plat. they suck together, they always trying to take over everything. it really sucks. but i have had no probs with the radeon in win98se, win2k or winme. just make sure you get the updated drivers if you use me for full compatabilaty. i reccomend the radeon too. there will be a slight difference between the 32 ddr and 64 ddr in graphic intensive games that use things like t&l and anti-aliasing a lot. and if there really isnt that much of a difference now, there will be when new games come out. if you are still stuck between the 2 versions just ask yourself if the price is justified by the slightly better preformance/graphic quality
