Thread: Icons in WinME keep changing

  1. #1
What would cause WinME to keep on screwing up various file types icons. like text files all use excel icon etc. but it happens randomly and uses what ever icon it feels like. when I use tweakui and rebuild cache it goes back to normal.

The fact that its made by microsoft.
I can't believe your using WinMe, The crappiest Windows ever written. Switch back to win98se and save yourself many headaches.
As far as what could be causing it, many programs register their file types when they are loaded (like winamp), one of these might be messing it up. Right after the icons get messed up backtrack and figure out what program you just ran. But since you say its random thats probably not causing it.

Video drivers, or a program badly using those drivers, can do that - they disrupt the icon cache. Its not a ME problem, and there isn't much you can do other than rebuild the cache. Or you can use something like Winboost to increase the icon cache size, which can help too.

Me isn't that bad! Works better than 98se for me, and that restore function is a real life saver when you are experimenting with overclock settings.

if you have 98se, there isn't a lot of reason to go to ME, but if you are on 95, it's fine. It's not worse than ME at all.

I recently attempted to use WinME on my gaming machine. Huge mistake! Most of my games would lock up on me after a few random minutes of game play. Updated all drivers, installed game patches, yada yada yada. Went back to Win98SE, problem solved. Anyone wanna buy a copy of ME? I wouldn't even use it as a paperweight.

Minor side trip - it is not the function of the OPERATING SYSTEM to give you the ability to edit home movies! Minor apps like a calculator and text editor, sure. This is EXACTLY the thing that got M$ in trouble in the first place. End of side trip.

I use Win2k on my non-gaming rig. It's my stable "don't mess with it" office-type box. Never even gives a hiccup. As soon as I get more comfortable with Linux it'll replace my Win2k box. Just cuz.

Oh, and why the hell is anyone still using Win95? What a piece of junk. It might have a place somwhere, maybe, but not on the computers of G|A readers, IMHO.

Sorry about that. I just realized that my last post could be called a flame, and it was a bit off-topic. Not intentional, really.

Darth, LPM mentioned that the System Restore function was a life saver. Have you tried using that?

I tried using that. Took like 2 hours, and then it finally gave me a message saying that my system could not be restored. @$#@$!!!!
