I just bought that refurbished vcr from buy.com and it has a problem recording. I can record something off the TV, but when I play it back it's fine but at regular intervals the picture fizzles out and back in to perfect, then repeats. The sound quality doesn't change, but this picture thing it annoying me. Adjusting the tracking doesn't do anything.
I have my coax cable plugged into the vcr which outputs to the tv through another coax cable.
Can anyone help?

How often do you record over the same tape? That could be the problem. Other than that it sounds like you need to refurb your refurb.

Hmm, so its a brand new tape and you are getting that sort of problem. First thing we would have a customer check is that all their connections are correct. I.e. - tightness of the coax input from the wall, or alternatively that your RCA's are plugged in all the way. I have had lots of customers who tried to hook up their machines backwards. Alternatively, I have had some who tried to make a hi-fi unit mono, by hooking only one channel up. If its not the cables, and its not the signal, then your VCR is probably defective. If you just bought it I would contact Buy.com back and tell them its defective. They should either replace it for you with another refurb or a new unit, or refund your money.
Why are you buying a refurb VCR anyway, VCR's even S-VHS vcr's are cheap as can be? Well, good luck getting it taken care of.
One last thought, was you could try cleaning the heads on the VCR...generally wouldnt be intermittent problem though, but probably not the culprit,
