Car Audio thrifty mods

Here are after-market additions to my 1989 Acura Integra RS

*Sony CDX-4875 CD player single DIN -- $180
*Infinity Reference 5.25" speakers -- $60
*Pioneer 6.5" speakers -- $60
*Optimus 200W amp bridged to 1 channel (Radio Shack) -- $99
*Pro Series 200W RMS 12 inch sub (Radio Shack) -- $40 [Same specs as MTX3000 subs]

A loud and clean system for under $500 =)
I did installation of everything except the CD player myself, so that saved a good $80. I also had a professional carpenter I know make the sealed box for me, so that was done as a favor.

Here's what i got in my '98 Toyota 4Runner SR5

Pioneer Premier P1r
Soundstream SPL 6.5 components
Soundstream SPL 4 components
Phoenix Gold XS4600( to front and rears, at 2 ohms )
Phoenix Gold XS2500( sub )
JL Audio 12W3-D4( 4ohm DVC )

My friends helped me out with most of the installation, so that saved me a bunch.

None yet in my Porsche (still sorting out the electrical problems, didn't want to go installing something that was going to cause even more drain), but in my mom's '84 300TD station wagon, I put in a monster system:

Alpine TDM-7574 - cassette deck, so my mom could listen to her books on tape and so I could listen to mix tapes
Boston Acoustics FX4s up front
Boston Acoustics FX92s in back
3 10" MTX Thunder 7000s in a custom box (Bob Lincus' design, built by yours truly out of 7/8" Baltic Birch)
Phoenix Gold QX2350 (2 of the subs)
Phoenix Gold QX2180 (3rd sub)
Jensen XA2100 (rear speakers, only crappy part of the system)
All the wiring is Streetwires and Whirlwind, with splitters for the power and ground lines
Optima battery to power everything (don't remember which one)

Not exactly a thrify mod (actually, it's a little over 2 grand in equipment), but it sounds absolutely killer. The 3 subs are definitely overkill, but what can I say? I put them in when I was a junior in high school, originally powered by a POS Earthquake amp that could barely handle all 3. Kept overheating when I'd play it for more than 20 minutes. The amps and Boston Acoustics speakers all got installed between my senior year in high school and this past summer, and were partially paid for by my step-dad.

Only thing the car doesn't have is a damn CD player, but I didn't feel like spending the money after going away to college, and my brother's Discman lives in the glove compartment, so it works out.

I guess it works, but it sucks to have a great system and nothing to listen to (something that will take advatage of that 2g you spent)

Ehh, all I listen to is tapes, anyway. The guys at Skills have 15 tapes out between the 4 of them, and I've got another 40 or so that I've collected over the last two years. Plus I get more all the time, so I'm never too bored. Long live the underground.

stock tape/radio deck in my Prizm, and the tape deck is broken, so i can't even plugg in the tape adaptor and listen to a CD / Minisdisc

I'm stuck with the radio.
