    Question

Since my DSL company went belly up, I am limited to using a 56K modem on my laptop as my only access to the internet(yeah I know it sucks). I still have my internal network going, running on a SMC Barricade. What I am wondering is if there is some way that I might be able to share this internet connection with my other computer over the network. Probably not, but I figured I would ask since there are some smart peeps in these forums and I wouldn't put it past them. You know who you are!
If not then cool thanks anyways.

You could easily enable Internet Connection sharing. Just goto the properties of the Modem. You should have a tab that's labeled Sharing in Win2K, it should be the same for other Windows products, I'm not too sure, I haven't used Win98 in a long time, and have never seen a computer running WinME. Just enable sharing and that should do the trick.

don't SMC routers have a serial port for external modem connections. Check to see if yours does, if so then all you have to do is connect a modem to the router, set the settings (phone # etc.) and you should be up

Unfortunately Hapoo my router doesn't have that. I am using Win98 and I don't see a sharing tab in the modem settings. Has anyone used Win98 to share a modem? Thanks again.

To get 98 to do it, you'll need to install a proxy program, like Winproxy. Or, upgrade to ME or W2K - they both have a proxy server built in.

Of these options, the one I'd recommend is upgrading to W2K.

There's a MS update for InternetSharing for WIN98. I don't think you necessarily HAVE to upgrade to ME.
