Resolution w/ respect to televisions?

As i understand it, television and computer resolutions are not comparable.

Just curious if anyone knows anything on the matter or if there's an optimal computer resolution to use to display VGA on a television? (Logically lower resolutions should display better on a television due to the low 'resolution' of televisions, but i was wondering if there is an optimal resolution for most household televisions?)

personally i dont use anything higher than 720*480, even on the best (analague) televisions everything is blurry. And since i mainly use it to output video, the resolution really doesn't make that much of a difference.
