Yo, guys,
Help needed!! I am currently looking for a CDRW..wondering whather i should get the plextor 8/4/32 for 175 or sony 10/4/32 for 195?? I can care less that 20 dollars difference if the sony one is really worth buying. Oh, and if you guys have any cheap deals on these CDRW, Please please tell me. =)

Hey gumoj, in my own experience with the sony 10x, I would totally recommend the plextor. My experiences with the sony 10x were just horrible. I kept getting buffer underruns at 8x, not to mention 4x. And I have another burner at 4x, and I've never gotten buffer underruns with that one so I believe that the sony 10x, just plain sucks. But thats my opinion.

Yeah NEVER get the Sony CDR writters they are crappy beyond belief I believe 2 good choices for CDR's would the plextor and yamah there are probably other brands that tag along with them but so far I like these 2 the most and if you were to get plextor get the 12x hella awesome but hella expensive, yamah 8x is also pretty good 4 mb buffer now all u got to do is find the deals yeah you might be able to check pricewatch for some good prices but I cam no clue www.pricewatch.com Sometimes they have some decent deals

you can get a good plextor for cheap nowadays. do you want scsi or ide? scsi would be the better choice and you may encounter less problems depending on your system.

Never had a problem with my Sony 10x/4x/32x EIDE... Donno why, have heard horrible things about it, but so far, its been a great drive. Very stable and reliable. I only get buffer underuns when I try to burn mp3's to audio cd, and I think that is because I am only running 300mhz, so it can't decode the mp3 and write at 10x at the same time...

The Plextor seems the way to go.
They seem to be the leader in CDR's as far as reliability goes and their price usually reflects that.

I personally have a Yamaha 8x4x24 SCSI and have never burned a coaster or had a problem with it, helps when it has 4MB buffer,which is much better than the JVC one (I still have) that only had 256k buffer, which I bought when CDR tech was new.

Another drive you may consider is the one by TDK, good for sound ripping.

Other than that I would say go with the Plextor,(that is a pretty good price for a Plextor) it also comes with software to backup your hard drive that can't be found anywhere else.

I've got to heartly reccomend my Smart and Friendly 4x2x24 (Its a JVC) and I've heard good things of their other burners (their other brands re-marketed with a soft package and added support).

Also, I've seen a Plextor SCSI working very well. They're renowned for reliability.

I've heard a lot of nice things about the Plextor... but I have to say I lucked out on my burner.

I grabbed a Ricoh 4x4x24 (mp7040a) about a year, maybe a year and a half ago. Something like that. Anyways, at the time it was jsut below top of the line...you could get 6 and 8's but they were expensive. (NW Ontario, Canada...yeah yeah you punks in the states prolly had 8x's in the early 90's but im not quite so lucky. I'm still dialup for goddsakes!) Anyways I picked one up no problems at all (After a simple installation of new aspi drivers...stupid Adaptec EZ CD Creator) Then I found a little site about flashing a ricoh mp7040 (my burner). You could actually flash the thing to a mp7060 (6x4x24) So i read a little more, kinda thinking that it was a scam or something. But i tried it anyways. I think the chance of increasing my burning time by a third was stronger than any rational thoughts such as "You're ging to fry your burner, moron" could possibly be. So i flashed it...and I'm not ****ting you...I've had an mp7060 ever since. They're the exact same drives.

My point it...if you can find some dip**** selling an mp7040 for dirt cheap...consider it a 6x4x24...not the advertised 4x4x24. (It burns fine at 6x)

I have been doing alot of research on CD-RW's, and just ordered an Acer CRW-8432a from www.mwave.com for $209. Besides the 8X/4X/32X speeds it has one feature that none of the others had: an 8 meg buffer and flash memory for easy firmware updates. I've heard alot of really good things about this drive so I can't wait to install it.

Does anyone know if that acer drive is any good for overburning or very reliable at all? and is it scsi?
