Development of biofuels could significantly reduce our consumption of fossil fuels and nuclear power.
[*] Hemp grows well without herbicides, fungicides, or pesticides. Almost half of the agricultural chemicals used on U.S. crops are applied to cotton.
[*]Hemp produces more pulp per acre than timber on a sustainable basis, and can be used for every quality of paper. Hemp paper manufacturing can reduce waste-water contamination. Hemp's low lignin content reduces the need for acids used in pulping, and it's creamy color lends itself to environmentally friendly bleaching instead of harsh chlorine compounds. Less bleaching results in less dioxin and fewer chemical by-products.
[*]Hemp fiber paper resists decomposition, and does not yellow with age when an acid-free process is used. Hemp paper more than 1,500 years old has been found. It can also be recycled more times.
[*]Hemp fiberboard produced by Washington State University was found to be twice as strong as wood-based fiberboard.
[*]Eco-friendly hemp can replace most toxic petro-chemical products. Research is being done to use hemp in manufacturing biodegradable plastic products: plant-based cellophane, recycled plastic mixed with hemp for injection-molded products, and resins made from the oil, to name just a very few examples.[/list=1]

okay, i think i know why hemp is not legal... see that first post up there? think a politician can read it, study it, comprehend it, take notes on it and remember the information for more than five minutes? riiiiiiiiiight. hemp is bad. old ladies who vote are scared of hemp. what if those bad ol illegal immigrant migrant farm workin types started hiding that mari-jew-ana in amongst the hemp? its such a slippery slope... so no hemp for you.

and there is one drawback - if all of our paper-producing forests were converted to hemp fields, all the eagles and squirrels and other cute n cuddly wildlife would have that much less habitat. not that paper farms is optimal, but they's better than hemp fields.

that said, i support hemp - it's not a huge drawback.

Don't forget the economics of the war on drugs. Whole industries are based on detecting smuggled drugs and the like. What would all of the DEA agents do without people to arrest? Not to mention the prison workers. I would wager that a not insignificant portion of society makes a living out of this "war". I doubt any politician wants to pass any laws that would cost jobs and his campaign contributions from the PBA and the like.

This is one of the reasons that it is not leagal. America has been brainwashed into believing that hemp and MJ are the same thing. MJ is one variety of hemp. Most hemp contains very little THC. You would have to smoke the whole plant to get a mild buzz, and kill yourself in the process due to lack of oxygen or smoke inhalation.

Yes, the "War on Drugs" is costing us our furure. It's time for this "war" to end and for us to get on with our lives.
