I HATE THE WORLD!!!!!!!

okay, so today i just hate the university system in this stupid fucking chimp-ass country. my sister and my husband both applied to the same graduate program in architecture.

my sister's stats: nominated for several awards for outstanding designs in the course of her 4-year undergraduate career. spends 60 hours a week minimum in studio. works her ass off and loves it. consistently impresses her employers in her summer internships. has a 2.9 gpa due to severe test anxiety (all a's in design courses) and got about the 60th percentil on the gre.

my husband's stats: has a BS in biology. dropped out of neuroscience grad school. tried to be a real estate appraiser and quit in 3 months. has never held a job for more than a year. not particularly creative. but, whoa mama, he has a 3.2 gpa and was in the 92-96 percentile on the gre.

they accepted my husband. will he make a good architect? who the fuck-all knows, but damn, he look good on paper. they rejected my sister.

fuck em. fuck em all. fuck em, they trash. i am very, very, very upset about this.

so i did something stupid. i wrote a letter to everyone on the admissions committee asking them to reconsider her application.

man, am i gonna regret that one in the morning, but it's already irrevocable, and for right now, i am still shaking with righteous indignation that these fools would rather stock their class with test-taking automatons than skilled, creative, hard-working future architects.

i am happy for him. i never doubted that he would get in, tho, so it was underwhelming when he did. and i'm being realistic here - he is smart, but has said himself that he is not particularly creative. he may or may not make a good architect. my sister, however, is already a FABULOUS architect, who just happened to get poor grades in french and other stupid courses.

i'm going to take her shopping for a power suit and just hope that she gets a great job.

the whole thing still has me shaking, three hours later.

and i know that the numbers are god, but i guess i just still had the tiny illusion that they would look at SOMETHING else in addition to the numbers in a field like architecture - that professionalism, good communication skills, a gorgeous portfolio, and straight a's in design would count for something. there goes my last illusion. i am now 100% disillusioned.

I have to agree that schools need to be "smarter" about their selection process, specially for graduate school. I had the same experience when I was in grad school. There were plenty of underqualified people in my class, and when it comes to getting a Masters in Fine Art, I figured that "knowledge of design technique and asthetics" was a requirement. Apparently not. All schools want from you is your money. Show that you can afford school, and they will start overlooking your GPA and such.
I guess the school your sister's applying to isn't exactly a "design-oriented" type of school.
