    Question

I thought some of you might be able to help me out with this problem, seeing as how many pictures are posted in these threads.

I am starting a webpage, and I'm looking to use some larger size (1+ meg) files on it. I was using Geocities as my host, but they are really beginning to piss me off, because they are really picky about their hosting. I need a web-based solution to this issue, because I move often, so I can't use my ISP as my host.

If anyone knows of any sites that might work for me, let me know. I would really appreciate it. Thanks.

(Sorry if this is a stupid question, but I am new to the world of webpages and web hosting. Thanks again.)

do u have your isp webspace? if u do ... u can go to http://www.dns2go.com and use that proggy to point to a website...

so for example, if i signed up for one as k2.d2g.com

then that url would point to some other long url or something

There are no stupid questions, but there are a lot of inquisitive idiots

Thanks for the info K2, but that won't work for me. I can't use my ISP space as my host, because I'm always switching ISP's.

See I move at the end of the school year, and I move back home because I'm a broke-as-a-joke grad student. Mom already has an ISP at home, so it makes no sense for me to have a separate one. It makes even less sense to keep one going in another state just to host images, especially considering that when I'm at school I use roadrunner, which runs $40/month. (I hope that makes sense)

If anyone knows of a web-based, hosting site that actually hosts without being a pain in the @$$, please let me know. I would really appreciate it.

Everytime this conversation comes up, there is only one solution

    http://www.spaceports.com

free, unlimited space. and also CGI and mySQL if needed. all you do is put one ad banner on your page (and get 10 cents/click as well)

Why don't you use your University's server? Talk to your postmaster about getting unlimited space in your public_html directory. Tell him you need to have datasets available on the web for co-authors etc.

How large are the ads they place on your page? I don't mind having an ad on my page. I mean, they're giving me the space for free, and they have to make money somehow. But I don't want something taking up a quarter of the page. And they don't use pop-up adds do they?

the best advice, is really to ask your college. They forgot about my space (I transferred last year). I now have unlimited banner free space, that will always be there
Am I alone here? Is that it?
Am I the only one who sees.

Maybe we can learn to be just like him.

I'm going to check with the network administrator at my school. They will host me, but I'm not sure if they will continue to do so after I graduate (May 2002). I'd rather find somewhere to host it for a while so I don't have to move everything in a year.

Go check it out - sign up and make a sample page, or go to their site and check out their featured personal pages. That way you'll see how big the bottom banner will be on your screen...
My monitor is 17" @ 1024x768, so I'm going to go there soon and check it out. And thanks for the doteasy.com link. They look pretty good. I'd rather get tons of spam than have to put up with banners for God knows what on my site.

Thanks again for all the help everyone. I can't work on it now - I've got two term papers due Wednesday - but once I decide I'll let everyone know.
