I think my next car (aside from another bmw) will be porsche though. But it will have to while a while...a long while...
a bunch of loser cars...
'87 Chevy Impala (the rolling boat)
'91 Hyundai Excel (I learned how to drive a stick when I had to drive it home)
'95 Chrysler LeBaron (somehow I got one that was pretty problem free--until I decided to ram the car in front of me [actually I think it was an accident])
'95 Infinti Q45 (made a nice battering ram as well, but stood up very well in the accident)
My parents once owned a Vega...

Here's my list:
1987 Nissan Sentra Hatchback
1989 Volvo 740 Turbo (actually, I forgot what year it was)
1993 Toyota Camry LE (eventually went to my sister)
1995 Honda Accord EX (this should last me a while)
'Scuse me? Punk, you've driven, what, 4 giant, unwieldy, slower-than-a-dead-sloth-on-a-cold-day SUVS? FYI (I just found this out and felt the need to let everyone else know, too), the 944 Turbos had conservative factory chips designed to limit their performance to just below the 911s of the same years. Can't have your upstart water-cooled front-engined car beat out your flagship, can you? So switch the chip and the 944T makes 260 hp, same as the 911, except minus a few hundred pounds and with much better weight distribution. So HA!Originally posted by pennypinch

Whew. I guess I'm just in one of those ranting moods.![]()
- 1982 VW Rabbit which was SOO cool. i loved that car
- 1984 Audi GT Coupe which was soooo nice, and i would probably still have it today (well, maybe not) if my sister didn't wreck it.
- 1987 VW Cabriolet. i drove that sucker cross country a few years ago
- 1986(?) Vovlo 240 Station Wagon. I really always wanted one!
- 2001 Saturn SL1 (it is the lamest car on the list, i know, but its new
)
Now for the list of cars that i drove right immediatly following the destruction of my nice cars. (the first three on the above list were all totaled, and the vovlo was just old and broken when i got it.) And i didn't consider any of these my car because i didn't buy them or want them.
- 1986(?) Honda Civic hatchback which i totally despised
- 1984 Chevy Chevette, "Ya wanna ride in my vette?"
- 1986 Audi 4000... This rode really nice, but none of the doors or windows opened.
- 1980 Audi 5000 (see above)
- 1984(?) HUGE BOAT CAR and i can't even remember what it was cause it was so tramatizing having to drive it.
i'd rather be down the shore
OH SNAP! guess where I am?
I was living down the jersey shore before Jersey Shore.
How does anyone even watch that show???

Oh, come on. ALL Porsches come outta the house with conservative chips. You chip up a 911, and it'll blow the doors offa a 944!Originally posted by Ice-9

As for your bally-hooed weight distribution, the weight distribution is EXACTLY what makes the 911 great. They absolutely emasculated the 996; I'll never buy one. Give me a 993 C4S (or a Turbo S), and I'd die a happy man.
Whatever. There was a reason you never saw 944's and 911's in the same races...

Huh? Maybe a 911 Turbo. But you just don't get that much additional horsepower out of chipping the NA engine - maybe an additional 10 or so, and if you do some intake work, etc., sure, it'll be faster. The chips that really work, though (from what I've seen), are the ones on the turbos, because the real power to be gained is from adding boost. The 944 Turbo engine holds up to about 16 psi of boost, stock, and the factory chip only provides for something like 11.5. You get a pretty huge jump from kicking that up, although the 944T does get taken in the low end because of the 911s superior torque. But when you chip a 911, you just get slightly more aggressive throttle and engine timing, and a slightly higher redline. There's just not that much more horsepower to be squeezed out! Now, if you do some other engine work at the same time...Originally posted by pennypinch

All right, I could see your point on this one. I don't know how to drive a 911 - if you gave me one, I'd probably wind up in a ditch very quickly. The 944 is a much more forgiving car, and it's possible to drive fast with much less effort than a (pre-996) 911.
Whatever. There was a reason you never saw 944's and 911's in the same races...
Oh, I won't argue that the 911s get waaaay faster when you start working on em. The 944 still does only have an inline 4, and the 911 has had probably 100 times the R&D budget of the 924/944/968. But if you go to the PCA track or DE events, there are some guys in 944s who will blow away all but the top 911s. 450 rwhp in a 944 Turbo S. That's not bad by anybody's standards, am I right?
1990 Ford Escort (3 accidents and 130k miles)
1991 Ford Tempo (had power steering AND AC!)
2000 Honda Civic LX (has a big "H" sticker on the back, neon license plate holder and fake chrome. does 0-60 in just under 5 minutes!)
Next car will be a hybrid or fuel-cell

You want to know what's moronic? In LA, a pass into the carpool lane is worth it's weight in gold. SULEV (Super Ultra low emissions vehicles) qualify for them...EXCEPT HYBRIDS! For some reason known only to the chimps in office, hybrids do not qualify for a carpool pass, even though they meet the numerical qualifications. My chiropractor was going to buy two just so he and his wife could cut that time off their commute. Now, he's ordering two SUV's. Way to go, EPA, DOT, whoever. Ya really screwed the pooch on that one.Originally posted by ironchef

that's extraordinarily moronic. great way to get public acceptance! on a slightly more positive note, i noticed in doing my taxes this year that there are some deductions possible for folks using alternative fuels and things of that nature. someone's got the right idea.Originally posted by pennypinch

these things are just cool. there's a Honda Insight driven around town (alexandria, va). yeah, they're funny lookin, but they're so neat. the guy got into into it and just drove away. no noise at starting it up or anything. i'm looking forward to the Ford hybrid SUV (i think?) i saw advertised.

ok, my list will be really short if i don't include my bikes...
'85 Honda Shadow VT500c (after a year, a drunk girl hit me and totaled it)
- (Loaner) '95 Nissan pickup (my Bro. was nice enough to loan it to me since he just fixed his other car.)
'96 Geo Prizm (It's really a Toyota ok?!?!?)
- (8 months after this I fixed my '85 Shadow)
'93 Honda CBR 600F2 (4 months later I sold the Shadow to a co-worker)
I still own the last two, and am looking to get another car for doing autocross this season.

Yes, I've paid for them, but that doesn't stop an elected REPRESENTATIVE from encouraging or incentivizing certain types of behavior that are in the best interests of everyone involved.
Oh, I forgot. Carpool lanes run contrary to Georgie-pooh's personal interests. Then they are stupid.

I can get you the statistics that demonstrate that having a carpool lane actually enhances the overall flow of traffic - my friend is working for a transportation systems researcher here at Berkeley. Plus, it IS better for the environment because it encourages people to share fewer vehicles. Therefore, instead of having many people in many vehicles being even more stuck in traffic, you have the same people in fewer vehicles, and therefore less traffic. No matter which lanes it happens to be in.Originally posted by sbp
