I've had my setup running for a couple of months now and today one of the drives failed. The controller doesn't detect it.
It's a Promise Fasttrack Ultra 100 with 2 IBM 30gig 7200 rpm GXP drives. I was running a RAID 0 strip set so all my data is fubared.
Anybody have the url of that jap website where you go to pray for lost data.
which is why i think Raid 0 sucks.
There are many many many places that will recover data from a f'd up drive, just do a search on google.
Hmmmm, I don't recall asking for data recovery advise.
Anyone else care to READ my post and give an INTELLIGENT answer ?

My dad (one of the top guys in RAIDs and storage systems) once explained it this way:
A drive with a "life" of 10 years doesn't really mean it lasts 10 years (after all, how can you prove it?) It means that if you ran 10 drives for 1 year, only 1 (or none) would fail. And if you ran 40 for 3 months, the same result.
Therefore, the advantage of a RAID (failsafe and reliable) is also its downfall. You are almost guaranteed a failure because you have so many drives "in play". It is like buy 10 lottery tickets. You still have roughly the same odds of winning, but with more tickets you are likely to see a few hits (even though you will still net the same as with a few tickets).

ok in the mathamatical sense...the lone gunman is right (but im not sure of his numbers). If your asking if a drive would fail sooner because it was on a raid, then it would if it was stand alone, NO!
Raid does nto kill drives, but...it is possibl that the card might have screwed up the drive if you have a hacked raid card. SOmethign might have become screwed up while soddering the resistors, or it might be touching in the wrong spot, causeign it to degrade more and more over time.
BTW this is also why Raid 0 is not used...gofor Raid 1, 0+1, or 5

The web site I was refering too don't have a damn thing to do with RECOVERING data. It's about PRAYING for LOST data.

Hard drives are not more likely to fail in a RAID array. As LG explained, you may be more likely to see a failure because of the number of drives involved, but there is nothing inherent about RAID that will contrubite to drive failures.
