If you were one of those lucky or should I say UNLUCKY ones like me to have purchased this DVD player from buy.com, I suggest you cancel your order now. This is supposely an older version which DOESN'T have the hidden menu you all are looking for and DOESN'T play MP3. One more thing, Clearance items ARE NOT RETURNABLE!!!!
Cancel now or else.
Read the post on this thing: http://www.sbtpro.com/forum/index.php?f=0

Well, if the model you are gettin from buy.com is the OLDER version, then it DOES have the loop hole menu. If it is the newer version, then it does not have the menu. Hehehe ... looks like you got your stories mixed up or something. I purchased an old one a while back from CC and it works fine w/the menu. All ones manufactured before 9/99 are the ones with the loophole menu. All of the ones after it do not have it. So pretty much saying ... older = better.

I have one of the old ones... works well.
Got mine from Circuit City last year.

I believe there is a difference between the ones from CC and buy.com. According to the posts there were a massive return to buy.com because they couldn't play mp3 and had no hidden menu. Didy anyone buy one from buy.com recently that can verify this?
-
Well, I just ordered one...and I can't cancel it...so i guess we'll see....wose come to sorse I return it to CC with my other recipt...

Yeah he's right these apex dvd players are the first generation players without mp3 capability. The units with a manufacture date of 9/99 and after are all mp3 capable and contain the loophole menu. The units that they are unloading on buy.com are the units that were manufactured in mid to early 99' without mp3 or loophole menus. If there is any way to cancel the order I would do so asap. Right now the best place to get these apex dvd players is through circuit city. My 2 players have a manufacture date of 1/00 and they both have the loophole menu.
-
To get to the loophole, all you have to do is get into the preferences menu and hit step, then back and forward..right??

1)Press POWER. Turn on the unit with NO DISC in the drive, make sure that the drive is closed.
2)Wait for "NO DISC" to display
3)Press SETUP.You will get the setup screen. 4)Press DOWN until PREFERENCES is highlighted.
5)Press STEP.
6)Press track BACK.|<<
7)Press track FORWARD.>>|
8)The "Loopholes" menu is displayed.
Here in the loopholes menu you can change things like Region ID, CSS Encryption, Macrovision.

I called and ask about their Apex "clearance" special and they told me these were refurbished items. That proves the theory that they were returned from their previous sale when a bunch of people returned them.

BTW, you can cancel them or just refuse the UPS delivery to avoid the shipping charge going back to them. Good luck. Just cancelled mine. Becareful on their next Apex sale!!

Talk2Raffi where and when did you get your Apex. If you got it from CC you should be able to get to the loopholes menu.
-
I got it from CC just recently...it arrived on Monday...The manuf. date says 1/00, but I cant get the loopholes...
-
Mine has a date of 9/99 and does have the loophole menu. I thought they were forced to remove the goodies and so after that time they did not have the menu... and the ones prior to about that time DID have the menu. Maybe I am mistaken?

One of my models has the 1/00 manufacture date and it still has the loophole menu. One thing to check for is to make sure that you have no disc in the player when you are entering in the code. Also make sure that your remote is working correctly. There have been a lot of people that thought the loophole menu was gone but later found out that their remote was broken or they just forgot to input the code with the disc tray empty. Good luck

The buttons work on their own when a DVD is in the player...and i am trying it without a DVD in the drive....
One thing though...I think it knows I am hooked into my computer, cause when I try to watch DVD's off of my ATI, the macrovision screwes it up...
Meebe Ill get off my ass and try it out an a real tv...

I guess when I posted my warning yesterday morning about the buy.com clearance units,
I should've started a new thread about this problem instead of adding a reply to the earlier "Apex AD-600A Came today...".
I figured that those people interested in this DVD player would read the replies and catch my warning about the buy.com clearance fiasco...my bad.
The buy.com units, as far as I can tell from the Apex 600A Phorum (don't ask me, that's how they spell forum) are pre-09/99 units which do not have the loophole menu or MP3 capability. As I mentioned in my post yesterday, the description on buy.com made no mention of MP3 capability anywhere, thus my suspicions that these were returns from their earlier clearance deal/fiasco.
I ordered my 600A about the time CC started posting a warning in their stores that the new units would not have the loophole menu. I special ordered it, kept my fingers crossed, and got a "good one".
For those who ordered the buy.com units, good luck...
