What's S/PDIF stand for and what is used for?

S/PDIF (Sony/Philips Digital Interface) is a standard audio transfer file format. It is usually found on digital audio equipment such as a DAT machine or audio processing device. It allows the transfer of audio from one file to another without the conversion to and from an analog format, which could degrade the signal quality.

The most common connector used with an S/PDIF interface is the RCA connector, the same one used for consumer audio products. An optical connector is also sometimes used.

Thanx, so if my soundcard has that ouput, what real use do I have for it? I don't know what DAT machine is.

It's for if you got a reciever with a digital input. You can then hook up your computer sound card to the reciever and have it ouput to your speakers that way. DAT (digital audio tape) is the choice of many proffesionals for recording various things.

To really simplify it, its for a digital coax cable. You would use it to hook into your DD/DTS receiver or alternatively into any digital recording device with Digital Coax S/PDIF inputs.
