This is the D-704. Any good/bad comments about this one? I'm thinking about buying it.

personally I'd go with the SMC especially if they're still giving out the $20 rebate

Stupid question time. What exactly does a router do? We have a cable modem, but that isn't the same thing, right?

Well basically what a router will do is allow you to share a cable connection with multiple computers

For instance I have pacbell dsl which only allows you to have one computer logged on at a time. But with the linksys befsr41 4 port router with its PPPoE support I can make it so that all 4 or my computers are available to be online at the same time. It allows for networking. Furthermore, I have the SMC router hooked up to my SMC 2652W wireless access point so that my laptop can access the web from anywhere in the house or within a 500 foot radius. So I can feel free to sit in my bed and surf if I so feel like.

    Hope this helps.

We have our three computers on a network using a hub, and in order to use all of them online at the same time we had to get two extra IP addresses from our provider. Would using a router eliminate that need? Thanks!

Yes I would eliminate the need for the extra IP. What you do is give the router your external IP address or you could set it up for DHCP depending on how your service provider does it, and give you computers on you internal network a different IP so that when you need to access the internet it goes out the router.

Thereby eliminating the extra ten bucks a month charge for two extra IP addresses. It would pay for itself in six months. Now, the remaining question: is this process easy enough for a blonde to figure out? And thanks for the help, everyone.

Well, I'm blond and I installed a network in an old building with a router and a few hubs. If you already have the wiring set up, all you have to do is swap out the hub for the router and then configure the router. Just remember that the computers will now be behind a firewall so some activities (online gaming, napster) might have some restrictions or require more extensive configuring of the router.
Basically, all the configurations you should have to do is to set the password. I used Lynksys, but I'd assume that this is simialr.

    Good luck.
