On this day (back in 1905)... the largest diamond ever found--later dubbed the "Cullinan"--was discovered in South Africa. Specs: 3,106-carats, 1.33 pounds.


At Smithsonian’s Museum of Natural History in Washington DC, I'd seen this rock called the "Hope Diamond" (45.52 carats; supposedly a billion years old ).
