On this day in 1945, the Auschwitz concentration camp in Poland was liberated.
The photo is General Dwight Eisenhower's quote from what he had seen at the Ohrdruf Concentration Camp a few months later (April 1945). It's engraved on a wall outside the U.S. Holocaust Museum in Washington DC.

A number of US generals (Patton being one of them) forced the local German townspeople to tour the concentration camps after they were liberated. I think that was absolutely brilliant.

my guess is they had to have known (at least a little bit) what was going on, but were afraid they'd also be imprisoned or sentenced to death as well.
