My Maxtor 40gb 7200rpm is really hot and comps locks up and freezes sometimes.
Seems as if when I'm playing game it works fine. However when I start chatting or doing misc things, it locks up. I check to see if the cpu is overheating but i'm feeling the chip and heatsink and fan, it feels normal. But my 40gb hard drive is hot.
I run the game using virtual cd rom off of the 40gb hard drive. I'm thinking the hard drive is overheating and causing the lock ups. But it never locks up when i'm playing the game (which is a good thing).
I have another main hard drive 10gb 7200 maxtor but that one isnt hot. Why is it specifically that one that is over heating?
I'm running
Tyan S2390B w Tbird 1.2 266FSB w/ coolermaster heatsink and fan
512 ram
nvidia geforce2 64mb
win2k
300w ps
maxtor 10gb 7200 rpm (primary master)
maxtor 40gb 7200 rpm (secondary master) <- hot
acer cdrw (primary slave)
creative dvd rom (secondary slave)
netgear nic
uhmm anything else needed?
I recently upgraded the board/chip/fan from my old tyan board with overclocked 700mhz athlon.
I'm using the same hardware so I never bothered to do a complete format of the hard drives. Since both boards are the similar I didnt bother. Could this be the problem?
Thanks

Ps. I leave the cover off from the tower.
2ps. This is my first post. Hello alls.

Welcome...
...sorry no one responded to this...I'll toss my hat in on this...
First, it's very rare for a hard drive to heat up and cause lockups. Normally, ifa hard drive fails, you get BSODs, infinately long loads, and the hard drive will just FAIL...(the end)
I would look at your memory and bus, if you're sure its not your cpu.
However, if you want to cool your HD regardless there are a few "drive coolers" that you can buy-they mount in the 5-1/4 bays and your hd mounts in them. Also, you can go the cheap route and just mount your HD away from the rest of the components-either low near the intake fan, or above all the rest of the drives-hopefully near an exhaust fan.
Hope this helps. Good luck

I'll agree with Bires. I doubt its your hard drive if you do have the game on it and it does not lock when playing it. This would work the drive harder than just using chat.
Just a quick note, You have both your drives as masters and cd's as slaves. I read that this will slow down your system to the slower of the two. You might want to put both hard drives on the same channel and do the same for the cd players.
What kind of memory are you using and did this start after the board upgrade?

hm i've had the same problem also except my comp doesnt lock up it reboots when I run too much misc stuff... This only happens to me when i'm at home and has never happened when i was at the dorms. So if its heat related I'm guessing my dorm room was a lot cooler than my house. Also the rebooting only started after I added a second harddrive to my comp. The only thing that seems hot at all are the 2 hd's so I'm not sure exactly what is overheating. Any help is appreciated.
