Dubya has now successfully cut his supporters to katherine harris, his mom, and a couple of inbreeds in Appalachia.

He seems to feel that embryo cells = person and therefore we can't experiment on them. HOWEVER, since we are already experimenting on them, we can continue to do so (since I guess we have already deprived them of their rights, we might as well keep abusing them)

This is similar to his position on abortion. (i.e. Abortion = murder UNLESS the baby was not conceived willingly [rape or incest] in which case the baby suddenly becomes not a baby)

With his stem cell decision, he is penalizing plenty of LIVE people who could be helped and at the same time still cheesing off the Pope and ultra conservatives who helped get him elected. When George Bush Sr. did this, he lost support and his chances for re-election. His son has now put himself in the same place.

My point was that if he came down strongly on either side then he would establish supporters and opponents.

My making this anti-Solomonic decision, he has now made nearly everyone an opponent.

He IS a uniter... of people against him.

Nightline did a feature on this and the right wasn't happy and the left wasn't terribly pleased either.

Everyone can't be pleased all the time. And you forget there are other issues people take into consideration before deciding who to go for.

I kind of agree Bush was going to piss someone off any way he went.

What really bugs me is that politicians' beholden-ness to religious considerations is just taken for granted nowadays. Call me nuts, but I thought we were still working along the lines of no state church, yet everywhere I look, I see influences of Judeo-Christian morality. Sorry to say, but I'd wager the majority of the country, if not a plurality, are atheist. Another case of the squeaky wheel getting the grease. Sh|t. The Dems, for all their faults, at least seem to be relatively free of the religious brambles, although they seem to be wading on over in order to try and woo a few to their side. It's sad.

i dunno... there are more religious people out there than you might think, even among the under-thirty set. especially when you get out of the big cities. and it is appalling how much our government has been bowing to religion recently. if it goes much farther, i'm really going to worry about being publicly flogged for wearing short-shorts and other such nonsense...

Politically, it was really the only decision he could have made. He was going to piss off religious conservatives by allowing any stem cell research, and the other side wanted more freedom in research. I'm not a Bush fan, but I think the decision he made was the only way to be partially fair to both sides.

It was one of those things where your damned if you do and damned if you don't. No matter what he decided folks from one side or onther are going to pound on him for it. At least this way there will still be resurch done. May be slower resurch but it's still a change for those wacky scientist to come up with more information and ground breaking this that and the other thing. Besides they can still get private funding to resurch whatever they want, it's just the federal money can only be use under the guidlines they are setting for it.

As far as will he be re-elected or not, this won't make or break his re-election chances for it's too soon into office for anyone to care. He still has plenty of time to make us all hate him and not re-elect him.

yeah, but the nsf and usda money are the big tickets in biological research, and a good way to keep some bias out of research... drug company money often comes with puppet strings. personally, i'd like to hear him say that it's beign allowed because it's not evil, but that's asking too much... but you're right, it's about what i expected, and it's hard to bellyache too much, cause it coulda been worse.

wait, now i re-read and pay attention... can use fed money, just under guidelines... that's actually better than i expected. cool.

I have to disagree with your premise.

    Bush's re-election chances before decision = 0%

    Bush's re-election chances after decision = 0%

    No change.

Besides, he made a compromise and neither side was happy. This means that it was probably a fair comprimise. How much work do you expect from a man who's on vacation?

i mean... come on... you're joking right???

who would let a monkey in office for TWO terms?

i mean... how much can we all possibly laugh at the guy??
