basic steps for making your own WEBSITE

Ok, I've designed my own website with DreamWeaver. I have all the necessary files pertaining to the website. I have a registered sitename I want to use as the address. What are the next procedures? Well, I know I need to find a decent ISP. Then what? thanks for the info people.

Once you have your ISP setup, you should enter the inforamtion for your site in the define site option. You'll have to type in your website address, your ftp address, username and password. Also if your ISP says html is your root folder, make sure that you put that in the define site field as well. Afterwards, click connect and it should log you on to your website.

The rest is a simple drag and drop operation. The right side of the screen is your local folder, and the left is your remote folder. You can either drag and drop from the right to the left, or you can just hit the synchronize button and it will do it by itself.

    That should get you started....

Or you can be cheap like me and register a domain then just have it forward to a free webhost page.

wow thanks for offering man, but the purpose of my site will not be for business. I won't be making any profit off of it, so I think $25/month is a bit too much for me. It'll just be a personal website that introduces me and such. And I'll probably be keeping it and updating it for many many years to come (including many years when I'll be overseas away from the states), so hopefully I'll find a good free hosting service that I can just setup once and not worry about billing so much. I know this should be in the NEED DEALS forum but any recommendations on free web hosting services??

Those pop up ads are freakin' annoying.

Anyway, my question is how much is it to register a domain name? Do you pay every year or is it a one time fee? Thanks fellas.

I bought a bunch that I wanted to use (and hopefully sell) back when they had the Staples/Register.com promotion. They were selling one year ownerships for $1 each. Man that was a good deal. However, I haven't found a use for any of them (except the one I'm gonna use for my website) and I haven't been able to sell them either, so Basically it was still a waste of money. They all expire in a month. I put them up for auction at Afternic.com and no buyers yet...

If you just want the domain registration, Godaddy will do it for $9 a year and RegisterFly charges you $10 a year.

hey passwird, what do you mean by "just the domain registration?" Does that mean I won't be getting some things that I would usually be getting by paying the $35/year plan at other sites?

Hey has anybody used Homestead for their website?? I check some sites out and they have pretty small banners that I could probably live with (though I would prefer non). And their prices are not too bad. They have promotions now for $50/year of hosting.

Also I noticed that if I use them I get an address that looks like, .www.[some name].homestead.com Which is too long. Do you know if I can make it so that if I type in the domain name I registered, I can have it forwarded to the site?? If it IS possible, is that something I would do at the homestead site or at the site I registered my domain name??

Ok after doing a little research I found out that I can setup my domainname at register.com to resolve to the homestead IP address. So that question's answered.

One more question for those who have used homestead before. If you visit their site, they make a big deal of how easy it is "to create your own site" with their Web Design Wizards and such. But they don't seem to mention how I can import my own Dreamweaver files (or HTML files or FrontPage files, etc). I was just wondering if I could just use my own program and not use their building guides.

    Ok, forget homestead...

I did a Gotapex thread search with the words "web hosting" and I got a bunch of threads with people recommending the web hosting services they're using. The crazy thing is there were about 20 different services listed, but I didn't find any two people recommending the same service. That's how many services there are out there and that's how hard it is to choose. After looking around I was attracted to www.1dollarhosting.com cause that's just about the amount of money I want to invest in my website ($12/year).... Has anybody used them?

Man...It's so hard to choose from so many options. But thanks to your warning Dark, I was able to stay away from homestead. Just wish me luck in this ridiculous search.

Hey ucb, if you settle with 1dollarhosting, let me know how it goes. I'm thinking about signing up with them.

all right cool. I'll probably be signing up with them within a month hopefully. Just from looking at their website, it seems like enough for me, and for the price it's just what I was looing for. I'll let you know how it goes PAsswird.

idk about you but 20 mb space seems a little limiting to me and they will get you on going over, a buck for every 5 mb over. I use moonfruit untill i can find a decent hosting package, and you get 40 mb webspace for free, well it used to be free now they make you pay but i signed up b4 the whole pay thing started and didnt give them any of my info, where i live and such. so i dont think i can get charged. but the whole thing is made in flash and is superslow, it chokes my cable and some of my 56 k frinds cant even load it up. downsides to everything i guess

I'm not 100% sure, but I believe 1dollarhosting has NO ads. However, if it turns out they do, I might need some more specific help from you man. That's sound like some useful advice, cause right now my first priorities in choosing my hosting service is the low price and NO ads.

Xsiled, how are you hosting that sig image off angelfire without the "Hosted at angelfire" thing?

  23. #23
    Look at www.stevesdomain.net/post.cfm%3FID%3D37+1dollarhosting&hl=en]this[/url] person's experience with 1dollarhosting

The WORST service I've had on the net from anyone, period...and from my own host. I'm not like alot of 1dollarhosting clients, I made the huge mistake of putting my auction site (www.theauctionblock.tv) with them. The site is constantly going down for no apparant reason, sometimes for an entire day. Down time almost 100% weekend and peak weekday..yes, "rush hour" for business site. NO answer from tech support, many times for 4-5 days. When you get a reply, it's a "form" email, usually identical to the last one you got. When the site is up, slow load times on pages are common and the problem is getting worse. As of today (7-2-01) my site email has been down 24 hours, with no response from 1dollarhosting after 6 messages.
STAY AWAY FROM 1DOLLARHOSTING...you get what you pay for. Thanks all, pass the word. email welcome.
    Mike
