Talking Woohoo, got me an A4

Well, got rid of my jeep grand cherokee and so I was in the market for a new car. I was dying to get a 325ci, but alas price to high and I couldn't wait for the 2002 to come out. So I went to an Audi dealer and for about $5000 less I got an A4 1.8T. Sorry to dissapoint you happo, but I wish I could of gotten a BMW. Oh well, I'm still stoked on modding up that 1.8T engine. But I guess my Mom is getting a 2002 330i. . . so not all is lost.

What is your opinion of the Grand Cherokee? We are looking for a used one. Did you have any problems with it? Thanks! Kim

I had a '94 limited V6. It's an awesome truck, imho the best off roader in its class. I did have a lot of annoying problems with it. Had to change the tranny after 60k miles, luckily that was under warranty. And slowly but surely every single door lock failed, that was a $100/lock to fix. But other than that it's a great truck. I think the tranny is a fairly common problem too though. My friend has a '98 laredo V8 and she had to change her tranny too. If you do get one I would highly recommending to change the shocks to edlebrocks, they are worth it. The ride is drastically changed and braking is improved a lot too.

Thanks! One more question. Did you have a noise coming from the rear end? We test drove three yesterday (all with alot of miles) that were terribly noisy. The third, the one we will probably sign on (low miles) didn't. I'm worried that the truck is prone to rear end problems. Any insight?

    DarkFury -

The Grand Cherokee came standard with a straight six (I-6), not a V6 - as it clearly states in that article. A "V" engine has two banks of cylinders that, when viewed from the front, form a V shape, as in V8. What do you know, that "V" actually means something!

No noise from the rear ever, maybe the exhaust is bad on the one you test drove. Didn't really have any problems with the rear. . . not sure what you mean though. If you got any more questions feel free to e-mail me.

Yeah, I know exactly what you mean hapoo. I totally was unexpecting to dig the 1.8 engine. I've never liked 4 potters, but when I compared it to the 2.8, it actually felt more peppier with little turbo lag (around 2200 rpm's). And since I'd heard how much more easy it is to mod the 1.8T over the 2.8. . . and the price being cheaper than the 2.8 and even drastically more then the 325ci, I just had to get it. I'll be posting pics of it stock as soon as I can I guess. Plus its sort of a win win situation since my Mom will be getting the 330i, so I'll get to drive that once in a while, hopefully. Hmm. . . maybe I should change my sig pic now too?

The Grand Cherokee came with an I-6 until 98 or 99. Then they put in a V6 that was completely new to Chrysler. They also rengineered (can't spell today) the 8. Both engines got more power and better milage, which was sorely needed.

This information was verified with Carpoint and Kelly Blue Book.

    For 1997 - 4.0 I6 standard, 5.2 V8 optional
    For 1998 - 4.0 I6 standard, 5.2 and 5.9 V8s were optional
    For 1999 - 4.0 I6 standard, 4.7 V8 optional
    For 2000 - 4.0 I6 standard, 4.7 V8 optional
    For 2001 - 4.0 I6 standard, 4.7 V8 optional

I repeat, there has never been a V6 available in the Grand Cherokee. The 4.7 engine mentioned above is a V8 - not a V6 - and it replaced the 5.2 and 5.9 V8s. The 4.0 I6 is still the standard engine in the Grand Cherokee, at least through the 2001 model year. The new Daimler-Chrysler 3.7 V6 debuted in the 2002 Jeep Liberty.

If you're going to tell me I'm wrong, kindly PROVE IT.

As a matter of fact i was going to put "I'm not too fond of 4cyl (yes... even though i have one)"

the e42 engine rocks!! but as good as it may be, even a cheap 6cyl has more power.

I just asked because it just seems a bit...low... I would have expected a little more from an Audi. But what do I know anyway?

Yeah, it is a bit small for a "performance" car, but it's also turbocharged. With not too much work it can be taken to 300hp. The V6 that is also available in the A4 can be taken to 300hp, but it takes quite a bit more work and substantially more money. The 1.8T is a real performance bargain.

I'd still take a WRX over an A4 though, but that's another conversation...

I did try out the WRX actually too before getting the A4. But I'm so not down with the styling first of all, but I could of gotten over that. The engine is awesome in the WRX except for that the turbo kicks in at 2700 rpm which I found extremely annoying. The A4 kicks in around 2100 rpm or so. But the car is faster in a straight line. . . the thing felt a little more squirely in the handling and braking department, maybe it was just me. And I didn't like the feel of the shifter compared to the A4. Just my two humble cents. But my friend with a WRX will out drag me until I get a chip. . . heheh.

I have an '01 Jetta with the 1.8T. It's a 1.8 liter, DOHC mill, 5 values/cylinder, K03 turbo pushing (in the '01 Jetta) 7 PSI stock. Makes 150 HP and 150 lb/ft torque stock. '02s have different programming, make 180 HP, presumably about the same torque. I should add that the torque curve is FLAT in mine from like 1800 RPM - 4900.

The Audi TT has the same engine - either FWD with 180 HP, or AWD with 225 HP. A simple chip upgrade ($300-$500 from any of about 5 makers) boosts output to roughly 200 HP and 200 lb/ft (10 HP higher or lower depending on sub-model of the engine).

Visit http://www.20vturbo.com for a site dedicated to our little 1.8's. Stock 1.8T's run with Mustangs and Camaros. Chipped 1.8T's run with Mustang GT's and Camaro SS's.

Edit: Forgot to mention that my Jetta also has a full-size spare. Came in handy when I got a sidewall puncture while vacationing in Myrtle Beach with my wife this past weekend. I was pleasantly surprised to discover it. :-)

Well, for those owners of the following vehicles: Lexus IS300, Mercedes C class, BMW 3 series, Subaru WRX, Audi A4/S4, there is a meet at the Krispy Kreme in Van Nuys, CA tonight at 8:00PM. It's just a time to talk about your cars, mods, and most of the time do a quick canyon run.

Actually... the chip jumps the tourque closer to 240 lb/ft... and they ain't lyin'. Low-end torque is very nice in daily driving.

My chipped A4 has a nice amount of kick. The 1.8T engine just BEGS to be chipped.
