    Thumbs up Memento

I just saw Memento last night, and WOW! I had never even heard of the movie before, but I guess it just came out on DVD, and it was really awesome.

Yeah, definitely well done. I wasn't crazy about it though, simply because there was no real resolution. Who to believe? They did such a wonderful job of putting you in his place -- cutting to different scenes, replaying things -- that it became hard to follow just who the bad folks were. Or if there even were bad folks.

Very cool idea though, and they pulled it off very well.

edit -- doh, i rite like a dumma sometimes

Well, sometimes leaving an ending to the viewers imagination can add so many layers of depth to the meaning of the movie. Many of the great cinematic masterpieces (2001: A Space Odyssey, Blade Runner-director's cut, etc.) were able to become so timeless simply because of the director's choice not to provide a resolution for the viewers and leave certain things open for the viewer to figure out. The same movie could have a whole different meaning to everyone and even to the same person with each viewing. Though it's not a guaranteed trick, the director trusts the viewers' intellect to figure it out for themselves, and by taking that tremendous risk (and not bowing to the evil hand that's called Hollywood) are rewarded with the reputation as a master of the large screen.

the first DVD i havent seen in the theaters. i usually buy "safe" - getting the good movies only.

its the kind of movie i go for - not the typical hollywood happy ending. The DVD gives so much more information in understanding the film - shows the missing pages and the deleted lines from his memoirs. and even then, i still want to watch it again! i still cant figure out how he can remember that he has that condition, since it happened after he got the contusion.

    anyone care to explain?
I think because he had that tattoo on his hand that said Remember Dude's name here. Plus since he had all that stuff written all over his body he probably put 2 and 2 together every morning.

I enjoyed the movie. I will watch it on DVD again since now I know there is a bunch of stuff to see on it.

    Thumbs up

That movie just left me confused. I watched it twice and picked up a few more things the second time around, but it still befuddled me. That whole thing near the end where he was told his wife was diabetic really iced the cake for my bewilderment.

Whether they're good or not, unresolved movies usually leave me frustrated. But with this film, I feel like there's a resolution somewhere in the movie, if I could only piece it together. So now, I just feel stupid.

A big plus about the movie is that it actively engaged the viewer's mind in piecing the sequences together and in figuring out the "truth." Can't say that about too many movies these days.

Anyhow, I'm off to watch it backwards and hopefully gain a better sense of closure ...

basically, since he can not form any new memories after the incident, he cant remember that his wife survived the rape, that his wife sort of committed suicide by ODing on insulin he gave her. The memories of the man he investigated that had a similar problem with him was actually HIS, which he distorted himself. the memories were of HIM. Thats why if you watch it again, the scene where the other "forgetful" guy was in a foster home suddenly or in a split second switches to HIM sitting in the chair. it was actually HIM in that foster home (or mental hospital). But he cant know that. He only tries to form patterns with his f**ked up jumbled up memories from what was tattooed, or written, or the pictures he has, or the memoirs he's written, which actually forms into nothing really coherent.
way to like, give away the end half of the movie chosenfool!

i'm glad i just watched it last night, or else i'd be pissed! you should write a warning before you do that

i think we should make it a point to ALWAYS post one after the other.

that way, not only do we confuse ourselves, but everyone else on the board.

    whadda say?
