So, my question is, are you baseball fans happy, sad, supportive, or unsupportive of the history-breaking event?

    well im happy and unhappy.

Im unhappy cause hes an a-hole to the media n people, and thats one of the biggest parts of baseball. Without millions of fans there wouldnt be any business in baseball and his ass wouldnt be getting paid so he needs to give some respect.

But im also happy for the guy cause hes a great athelete and he deserves this.

He used to be an a-hole back in the day but the past couple of years he's been cool. He was an a-hole because thwey used to harrass him about child support and sh*t they had no business asking about. He treats the fans in SF really well. I like him so I'm happy for the record. His gang 'o homeruns will hopefully put the Giants in the playoffs (if all goes well tonight).

OK, now I'm sad. The Giants lost 11-10. I wouldn't be surprised if Shawn Estes has to hire body guards after giving up 5 runs in the top of the first. Nowe the Giants are out of the playoffs. Boo.

I always think it's neat to break a record, but it had a lot more interest when the record was 30-some years old. If it's going to be broken every four years, then it's not as exciting or even "mysterious" as it once was. In any case, it's a great accomplishment even if he's a butt-head. I'd like to see Sosa hit 80, just because he seems like a cool guy.

Congrats to Barry, I was rooting for the record, but I'm more happy the Diamondbax clinched! Woo Hoo! Hoo-ray NLW Title! Hoo-ray Beer!

its not really a race between 2 guys (sosa/macguire) but more of a race between bonds and the end of the season i guess you could say.

I'm happy for him. I think all the bad press and stuff is just a combination of jealousy and misunderstanding. I respect anyone whose so good that they don't have to suck up to the media and tow the league line. He doesn't play ball with the harassers in the press because he's so good he doesn't have to to win the spotlight. And that pisses the press off more than anything, because it usurps them as the "kingmakers and breakers" of sports, so to speak. Good for him!

Ditto on what topane said. As a three-year record, Barry's feat wasn't as exciting. Remember all the years of hype before McGwire finally broke the record? Griffey Jr. was always in the lead and always choked. Or remember that year when 4 guys from the Rockies had 40+ homers? Or ... *sigh*

I was also kind of upset when Mac broke the record because he got to play 5-6 games a year at Coors Field. I don't think it's just a coincidence that all of the home run leaders are from the National League. Personally, homers made in Colorado should be docked from the HR totals. But that's just me.

    Um, not really.

    1) THe AL has the DH so they get one more real batter in their lineup making it more likely that guys get more at bats and therefore more chances to hit homers. Homerun hitting advantage: AL

    2) Don't fool yourself. Barry only hit 4 HRs @ Coors Field (3 in one game). That's not that big of a deal. I'm sure there's plenty of sluggers who hit more han 4 HRs in another teams park this season. Nice try, but no cigar.

    3) Did you forget that Mark McGwire spent most of his career with the A's hitting bombs? Sure he didn't hit 70 there, but he hit a ton every year. His rookie year he hit 49 HRs and would've hit more but he took the end of the season off b/c his son was born.

    4) You mentioned Griffey. He's in the NL. He was injured a lot, but I don't think he'll be any better of a homerun hitter in the NL. We'll see though.

-no doubt Coors is a hitters park, but don't minimize Barry's achievment one ballpark or even two if you count Enron Field.

I don't think that pitching is worse, I just believe that some of the weapons that pitchers used to have, ie pitching inside to brush someone off the plate, are gone now. Barry, much like many others, is wearing so much body armor that you could shoot a baseball out of a cannon at him, and he wouldn't have to worry about much more than a bruise. Of course the pitcher could launch one at his head, but that's bad baseball, and could cause a hefty fine to be given not to mention endanger the life of the batter. Barry owns the plate these days since he can lean over the plate without worrying about taking a pitch to the elbow. That makes it difficult for pitchers to get him out, especially if their best pitch is a fastball.

The record was decent, but as I mentioned in a previous thread I think it isn't nearly as significant as Rickey's all time runs record. Biased opinion, of course. But I wouldn't be surprised if Sammy "say it aint" Sosa doesn't shatter the record within the next few years.

That's the lamest logic SDLoco. He's wearing armour? That elbow guard? If the ball is coming at him I think he'll move. In fact I've seen it. I agree that batters are too sensitive about inside pitches these days. That might be why pitchers can't throw inside as much, but it sure as hell ain't the "armour." Now you throw on the inside part of the plate and fukers go crazy. I say someone if charges the mound after a pitch that didn't hit them they get the rosin bag shoved up their ass and the pitchers team gets to go 9 on 1 to kick the crap outta the batter. The crap is becoming ridiculous. There needs to be some hard ass pitchers like in the old days who would throw at guys for that crap. Like Satchel Paige, he threw at a guy in the on-deck circle who he thought was leaning into pitches to get hit the at bat before. That's what we need.
