    Star wars episode 1

Whos going to rush out and get it on tuesday?

I'm not. You would think that since lucas has made billions of dollars from the starwars movies that he would spring a few bucks and have the DTS tracks on the disc. It just has dolby 5.1

Since I bought a player that ouputs DTS to my reciever to decode it, all 5.1 movies have sounded like crap. The matrix disappoints me now because the poor sound.

I think I will rent it first to see if the sound is decent enough.

Does anyone know why lucas did this? It disappointed me.

Well obviously he's gonna make a crap load of money by releasing a DTS version once everybody already has the current one. Then he'll make a "Limited Collector's Edition," then a "Signature Series Edition," then a "Platinum Ultimate tin-case Edition," then many years later a "25th Anniversary Box Set StarWars Anthology." That's typical of him and all other DVD studios!!

If I remember right Lucas is not a big fan of DTS. You must remember that THX is his baby...and generally supports a DD soundtrack. All of the THX sound trailers are in DD and its not because DTS was not available. Spielberg on the other hand is a DTS proponent. Hence the reason why Shaving Ryan;s Privates...I mean Saving Private Ryan (couldnt resist) and others were immediately released with a DTS soundtrack. So I doubt that you will see any DTS Lucas for a while.

From what I've read from various reviews online, the Episode I dvd has got a kick ass audio track.

The dd 5.1 may sound great, but not as good as DTS can sound. If you get a chance, listen to T2 in DTS and in DD5.1 Theres a major difference. I feel cheated that I have so many DVDs, and so few have DTS.

I never said that DD was anywhere close to DTS. I was just stating a fact concerning the probability of Lucas releasing anything with a DTS track. I have always been a big promoter of DTS. In fact I have promoted it for years. If you really want to hear the true difference get yourself a dvd with both formats on it and listen to the same scene. Do not touch any settings, just let it play first in DD then in DTS. I used to use Twister as a good way to demonstrate it. You can hear the nails creaking much clearer in the DTS version than you can in the DD.

The Episode 1 DVD is Dolby Digital 5.1 EX (which I presume is slightly better than regular Dolby Digital).

I just picked up the DVD today, and will let you guys know what I think about it when I watch it.

.....of course, my Logitech Z560's aren't available yet, so I don't really have a stellar audio setup at the moment.

Antone else know first hand how the pod race scene sounds? I think that would be awesome in DTS. Damn Lucas.

Well I was going to watch the multi-angle pod racer scene on the 2nd disc, but my Samsung SD-612 DVD-ROM drive causes my DVD software to lock up each time it's about to play that scene.

....Note this is a flaw with the drive itself and "NOT" the Episode 1 DVD. This drive is notorious for its problems regarding layer changes (locks up on nearly any dual-layered DVD when switching layers).

Looks like that Pioneer slot loader is calling my name... THEN I'll be able to watch both discs easily.

I caved in and bought it. All i can say is the pod race could have had much much better sound. Its alright, but i have heard much better sound in The Crow in DTS.

I picked it up yesterday, I had too! No way could I pass it up. I grew up on Star Wars so it has become part of my life blood! I must have anything Star Wars...I MUST!

    Anyway...

It's a cool DVD packed with more documentries than you can handle. The deleted footage wasn't that great and I can see why they were axed. You do get to see the whole creative process from start to finish and I love it! It cool stuff!

I don't know about the twin thing but I'm sure LPMiller will agree to the "evil" part...

Part of the reason that so few DVD's have DTS is that whoever owns the rights to it (can't remember the name right now) is charging much higher licensing fees than Dolby is charging. All that adds up and so producers don't use it unless they are sure that they can make more than enough to cover the costs. They also aren't going to put it into a movie that can't benefit greatly from it.

I'm not saying this is why Lucas didn't use it, because he'll certainly sell enough that he could probably pay the fees ten times and still make a profit. But this is a contribution factor with a lot of other movies.

Lucas wont use DTS, because Lucas owns THX, which has a partnership with DD. So his work will come out in Dolby Digital and DD EX.

Also, i prefer DTS over DD, but the argument between the two is so minute. All arguments over what is better, who cares, because when they make the dvd, they use different sources for the sound. Thats why there are differences between the 2. Bit rates...blah

I rented the DVD and was a little disappointed with the "making of" stuff - I really wanted to see how they did the shots of naked Threepio, but they never even mentioned it. The rest was ok - maybe I'll get it for Xmas from my mom.
