    Good Laptop, Good Price?

Now that you guys have answered my question about wireless networking....It's time to see what kind of laptop I should get. I KNOW Dell makes bad ass laptops but their nice ones are near the $3,000 range. What are other GOOD, well priced laptops? I'd rather not compromise value for price so if I have to go with a high price, then so be it. I just want something with good perfomance, quality and price. Preferably i'd like a company where I can customize the laptop online. Thanks.

Dell or IBM. If you're on a budget, Dell is the way to go.

Look at the refurbs if you're REALLY on a budget. Same warranty & support but costs less. Also, you're limited to whatever machines they have - you can't configure your own. However, I've had good luck in the past calling them up & telling them the configuration I'm looking for, and if you get a good sales rep they'll search for one and/or call you when a similar one comes in.

    Type?

Alot of it will depend on whether you want to haul around a 9 pound brick everywhere you go and have all the bells and whistles, OR, if you want to have a little feather-weight that'll do most tasks well but you get cut out on MOST extras and battery length. What do you plan on doing with the laptop?

I don't travel a lot. I want to take it between here and the library for research projects and homework. Also, if I have group meetings or presentations at all well it would always be nice to have one. I also go home to Houston sometimes. I don't want some paper thing laptop that is going to break in two seconds but I also don't want to haul something around. I would however like bells and whistles. I don't have a problem going with DELL but if i I can find another good laptop that is going to cost me a couple hundred less then well, that's why we're at G|A

    yeah

Well, the feather weights are pretty nice, the ones from Sharp have especially nice screens, but they're usually priced in the 2k range for decent ones. CNET.com does some pretty decent laptop reviews, they'd be a good place to check.

I just ordered an 8100 from Dell. I also looked at the HP 5425. It was $200 more, but came with a DVD, 256megs ram, and a 20gig HD.

The 8100 has the 1400x1050 screen, firewire, AC-3 output, S-video output, Geforce, 133MHz bus, and expansion bay. I can upgrade the ram and HD when I need too for less then $200. I'll miss the DVD drive, but the other stuff makes up for it.

Dell is having a special. For now you can get an Inspiron 8100 with:

    P3-1Ghz
    256MB PC133 Ram
    15" Super XGA @ 1400x1050
    8x DVD
    32MB Geforce2 Go
    WinXP Professional

All for about $1700 . I have almost the same exact laptop except I have Win2k and only 16MB Geforce2 Go (I payed close to $2K for mine just 2 weeks ago). The 8100 is a pretty nice laptop. It might be a bit too heavy if you're looking for an ultra portable. But if you're looking for a desktop replacement ... then it's a pretty good choice.

    my opinion:

brands that I trust for laptops are Dell & IBM.

However, if you want to go thin, my friend has a sony...the thin ones...he likes the laptop, but he's had bad experience with warantee/customer support (lost laptop, replacement had lots of dead pixels)....

So, even if you want to go thin, I think IBM came out with a new one....

I like those 2 companies, my sister has a dell that she's never had problems with and the school I went to used IBM's as loaner laptops...those things got sooo beaten up by kids, but the laptops handled the abuse, and kept on going =P.
