    DOS games

i found an awesome collection of old games, but im having lots of trouble remembering how to run them. the biggest problems i have are with mouse and soundcard issues. im using a soundblaster 5.1 live platinum with the legacy sb drivers installed, but i dont get any sound in any game. also, since windows now includes mouse drivers, but i use a razer boomslang so i dont know if regular mouse drivers will work. anyone know how to get these things to work?

Old DOS games never run quite like they are supposed to on Windows with new hardware. It might be possible to run them on VMWare. It is a virtual machine, you can install DOS on it and it will run and emulate standard hardware for the guest OS. You might give it a shot. Depending on the game, it might work pretty well.

yeah, i tried most of them in windows and i expected that they wouldnt run. but im having these problems in dos mode. i got the games at the underdogs if anyone else is interested. i have no problems *playing* most games, but cannon fodder 1 and 2 keep crashing my machine. i remember when i used to play those games back in the day with almost no problems, except ems and all that stuff. i wish i still had those old boot disks . games like micro machine 2 and humans give me no sound at all. ive tried all sorts of combination of settings (mem managers and sound card) and i cant get it still. the only game i played that had sound was indy 500, and that had internal sound only, no sb.

hmm, the last time i remember playing DN3D, which was less than a year ago, i had no problems at all. same with descent (played a few weeks ago) and doom. many of those came out after windows95 and worked well in dos mode and they didnt really need a mouse.

thanks bill, that site helped me with the mouse issue. the boot up disk util had a mouse driver which worked with my razer, but the boot disk itself wouldnt boot.

i guess dos doesnt recognize my soundcard, even with the drivers installed. it might be because its in the wrong slot or whatever and i dont feel like messing with the internals of my computer right now when its working perfectly fine for doing work with. i finally got humans 2 to work, but the game sucks and ms flight sim 3.0 works perfectly, but its pretty boring too.

Talking DOS Will Never Die (Okay for still a few more years)

They said Death to DOS, but I love DOS. With everything I do I seem to always end up helping people with trying to remember DOS commands of years gone past!

    Cheers!

just go to The UnderDogs, they have an awesome collection and links to other sites with even more games.

i dont know if they will work in xp, they probably wont unless xp has a better dos mode. anything that will work in windows (3.1, 95, 98) will work in xp, for example lemmings for windows works, but everything shows up small unless you run it under 640*480 res. i also got super tetris to work in windows with no problems. you wont be able to use a optical or usb mouse in dos and you will need a driver to use a ps2 or serial mouse. other than that you shouldnt have any problems.

true, but not all of them. for me a few games like mgs(2) and gt(1/2/3) will be, but not all of them. most games will not stand the test of time.
