Shallow Hal is Pretty Shallow Indeed

I saw Shallow Hal tonight with my family, of all people (they were visiting me today for my birthday). The movie was, overall, somewhat lackluster and, to put it bluntly, shallow. I must admit that there were a few funny moments here and there; the majority of which were shown in the previews. I would have felt much more satisfied if I had not already seen almost all of the laughable moments in the 30 second preview. I guess that says something about the quality of the comedy in this movie: all of the laughs can be fit into the preview, leaving the remaining 113 minutes and 30 seconds of the film as filler. I am a big Farrelly brothers fan, but this movie was a huge disappointment when compared to the brothers' other films. I was expecting to be rolling in the aisles in laughter, but alas, I did not. The only rolling I did was the rolling of my eyes at some of the predictable plot changes that occurred and at some of the cheesy lines. Overall, if you are willing to put up with the fat jokes and the concurrent message of "beauty is in the eye of the beholder" (which loses its impact at times due to the volume of rude jokes at the expense of the unattractive people in the movie) and are looking for a movie filled with sweetness, then this movie may just appeal to you. However, if you are hoping for another side-splitting comedy so characteristic of the Farrelly brothers, then I suggest that you rent Dumb & Dumber again.

i thought the movie was ok. what made it worse was the annoying teenagers sitting behind me making rude comments about overweight people throughout the whole movie. it was definitely not as good as i was hoping, and there was at least one part where i was offended. if i had it to do over again, i probably wouldn't see that one again.

just got back from it myself. i didn't think it was too bad, and i was honestly pleased with how un-offensive they made it (considering what they could have done, of course). i was also happy that it wasn't a "beauty and the beast" type deal. ya know, see throough the faulty exteriour to the beauty inside long enough, and viola, a fresh new butterfly comes out.

and the tail, man, the tail. the only time i've heard a theater laugh like that was American Pie 2.

Heh, that tail was something. I think I could have gone without seeing it wag, but it was still pretty darn funny.
