The best TV for $2500
I can't believe I'm starting one of these threads!! Usually, I hate it when people just vaguely ask for "the best XXX for under $ZZZ." I mean everybody has different taste and the question is so vague. I mean can you give us some examples to choose from?? And here I am asking the same question. So I'm gonna try to be a little more specific. Here I go.
At the end of the year I'm leaving the states and moving home to Korea. My mom wants me to bring a TV cause they're much cheaper here. Our budget is about $2500 and she says to get the 36" Sony VEGA (XBR). I looked around a little and found that for that money we could get a 40"-50" widescreen TV that's also HD-ready. I'm guessing HD broadcasting will probably become standard in Korea around the same time as here in the States (cause Korea is usually pretty up to date with tech stuff) so it'll be a smart investment to get something that's HD-ready. For now we'll be stuck with regular TV broadcasting for many years so being able to display regular TV clearly is also important (I heard TV's with "line doublers" can do that). Any recommendations?

The wegas are a better picture than projection because of a better resolution. I personally like panasonics over sony's because some reason. . . the price just doesn't seem to do it jsutice when the panasonics have similar if not better (IMHO) picture quality. I kinda can't recommend HD tv sets right now since. . . there ain't much out there to catch. But if you plan on having this set for years on end. . . maybe it would be smart to get it now. I personally will wait for hdtv to be an actual standard. But in all honesty. . . how abouts you buy a $500 tv and send the $2000 to me

its sad that the TVs are cheaper here when they're all built in Asia. it gets shipped here just so ucbstan can ship it back. suks. good luck man!

See Leon, that's the one my mom wants, but the only reason she wants it is because Sony is famous and she heard somewhere that it's good. Now I'm thinking, which is better, a 36" Tube TV or a 50" widescreen rear-projection screen?? They both cost about the same and I really really want the LARGE screen. Can you convince me that the Tube's image quality is so much better that I'd rather want the smaller screen? The WEGAs supposedly have nice video, but dows it really justify settling for a much smaller screen?

I guess it would depend on your main usage. I chose a CRT type of TV because I wanted to play games on it too. RPTVs are known to burn-in easier. If you just want to watch TV and Movies, then the RPTV might be your best bet. Also, don't forget that the WEGA is progressive and HDTV capable.
The image quality is amazing, btw.

How big is your room and how far away is your couch from the TV?

We've just moved to a new place and I haven't seen it yet but it's supposed to be pretty big. There should be at around 20-25 feet between the TV wall and the adjacent wall. What do you think?
