personally i would go with the ddr setup for assurance of ur comp lasting a little while, hard drive space is easy to add and sorta cheap, getting a whole new mobo and processor is more costly and time consuming. why not a ddr board from epox im not an amd guy so i dont know exact name someone help me out here but its a super nice board, dont know much about the a7a

Ya like that one dude said, go for what you need the most. If you're running out of room, go with a new hard drive. Although, I have heard from at least 5 people that their DeskStars have crapped out on them, I'd personally go with another WD, but that's just a preference. DDR isn't a big deal, and it IS pretty easy to update motherboard and chip as long as you haven't bought integrated parts. So if your system is crapping out like 900 mhz or less, then a 1.4 Ghz TBird would be nice with either DDr or SDRam
The Deskstar 60GXP and 75GXP models have a serious design flaw. Go with another brand. I have had to RMA 4 drives already.
I need to do that with 2 45 giggers that I have. I had them in RAID 0 and they started "acting up". I had already called IBM once and they told me the bs of reformatting and all will be good. Well, it was...for awhile. It came back as I knew it would from the stories I have heard online. It just pisses me off that IBM will not admit the problem. Really turns me away whether they have good drives in the future or not. They have always had the best drives, that is why I bought them. They ARE one of the best drives still, when they work correctly. I have a 60GB 60GXP in my other system for over 6 months now and it is working flawlessly. I got a 100GB Western Digital Caviar WD1000BB to replace my RAID 0. This thing is fast and I can't even hear it at all. Untill I got used to it I was wondering why I could see the HD light flashing because I couldn't hear the drive churn.Originally posted by Leon

LEON: Did you get drives in return when you did the RMA? Or did you get money back. I don't really want drives that will f'up again. I would rather just get money back if possible since I got a new drive to replace them. Got any info on this?

Even though I agree with joe52985 in going with DDR I don't think I would get the ASUS a7a266...ali isn't known all that well for the performance. Get the Shuttle ak31 rev 3.1 w/ KT266a chipset on it. It's cheaper than the Asus board and will give better performance.

Time to switch to AMD now I guess... (just kidding... )

I don't think this'll stop anything though - the better you idiot-proof a system, the more impressive the idiot becomes.

I've read that the Seagate IV are very good solid drives, quiet and fast like the IBM's but I've never heard any horror stories about it yet.
Here's my story.Originally posted by Speedfreak

I have two 75GXP 30GB Hard Drives in a RAID 0. After some months I got the scrape of death sounds and lost all my data. Called up IBM and RMAed them. They cross shipped them. But before I received the replacement drives, I bought two 60GXP 40GB drives because they are supposed to be faster and I needed the drives ASAP. So my two new 75GXPs are still here in my room. Recently, my 60GXPs (also in RAID 0) got the scrape of death, but only in the last section of the drives. So I partitioned them out (lost around 15GB of space) so I wouldn't have to deal with them until later. I am still using those drives, but I still consider them failed and defective.
They sent me new drives, Speedfreak. IBM is NOT going to send you money. Well, not unless the class action suit goes through.
What exactly is RMA?
I'm FREEGIN scared out of my butt right now. I have the 75gxp 60gb HD. A month ago I heard it shriek and I kicked my computer and it stopped(hehe). It's been fine since. I've been running the drive for well over 6 months now. Now my bigger concern is that I got 2 75gxp 75gb for my friend in a raid 0 setup. I really don't want to go through the trouble of getting those HD's returned!
First I trust Anandtech w/ there viking computers Athlon XP deal. Now I read about this... Not to mention MAXIMUM PC was parading on how well those drives worked too. I think I'll read user reviews before I make purchases dependant on the big guys always.

WHAT I REALLY WANT TO KNOW is from your peeps experiences
if there is a real FEEL differnece between DDR and SDRAM both
running at CL3 using like say...256MB
cause if theres a really LARGE feel performance to it than ill go with DDR
i dont refer to benchmarks. thats y
AMD + DDR or SDRAM

I've always had good luck with IBM drives though. I'll stick with them unless it's SCSI. SCSI has to be segate or nothing else for me.
I have a 40GB 60GXP and haven't had any trouble (knock on wood) but I wouldn't be suprised if it had a flaw. I don't do anything extensive with my system other than games. Real work is left to my Mac for which I run a SCSI RAID server for my home to backup tons of video and pictures from family albums etc. I also do a little photoshop work, and I got the mac version first so i won't spend another $600 on a Win32 version.
I also like IBM's warranty for their drives. I tell them I have bad one. They send new one...they give me 1 month to send old broken drive back to them or they charge me for it.
not that my 75gxp has broken on me.... but i will NEVER get another one again.
WOrks fine.. but from all the horror stories I heard... I don't want to take the risk.
