    Sucky Biased employers..

Male employers who do not believe in female network administrators-to the point where they cut your hours down to 10 a week and give all your assigned clients to "the guys" in the department because "the guys" seem to do much better with networking situations,(his exact words), so he sticks you in some lousy workroom managing a bunch of f*ckwits who are doing new builds.. but you REALLY know it's because his live in GF is the office manager and she is pissed because there is ACTUALLY another female in the office who can prove to be smarter than her and that threatens the crap out of her so to prove her point she tells him where to put all the females in the office and he listens for fear of being cut off.. (only 8 of us females in the office)....I'm turning in my resignation-this guy is an *******. I'd rather NOT work for him at all then have to put up with his crap anymore..blech. Just in time for christmas too-blech..FYI-he is not only doing this to me but to the other 5 networking ladies, and 1 who is the head of his marketing dept. Since I was only hired part time to begin with-I'm not loosing benefits or anything..just experience, and CASH..this sucks.I'd rather work at walmart.

    Contact a lawyer -

Now that's advice I NEVER give, because I hate people dumping their problems in the court's lap to take care of. However, if this guy told you to your face that the 'guys' are better at whatever, and has done the same to other women in the office, all it will take is a quick call from your lawyer to put an end to it. That is blatent sexual discrimination.

You know, if you get all of the ladies in the office to sign a letter and give it to HIS supervisor, you might have some power. They fear lawsuits.

As a lawyer, I say you should always contact a lawyer. Whether you should do anything is a totally different matter.

Depending on how large a company this is, the most productive thing to do is seriously inform human resources of the problem. Ask to fill out a complaint form so they know you think its serious.

That REALLY sucks. I totally think that both men and women are qualified for the same jobs and should be able to do an equal amount of work. Things should be based on what you can actually do and not what gender you are.
I know this feeling all too well though. At the beginning of this year, I was going to go in to the USMC, I talked to my recruiter, and we figured out a workout plan and everything. My dad was TOTALLY against it. ( My dad was the person that raised me so I do value his opinion ). We were at my uncles house and I was "sleeping" on the couch, and he told my uncle what I wanted to do, my uncle was all for it, but my dad said that girls don't belong in the Marines.
So I didn't end up going, all because of my dad and his stupid sexist attitude.

and here i thought u just chicken-ed out... dude... that's totally lame...

I say down with sexism...If a woman can do the job equal or better than a male can.. then she should be doing it, and not getting underpaid... or mistreated...

This is also another example of why i don't think highly of people who date ppl in the same company... crap like this happens...

So is it more of a sexist issue or is it a case of a guy who is so whipped that he sticks his neck out on a girlfriend's whim? If it's the latter, I think it's worse, because it's harder to do something about a jerk boss than if his motivations really were just sexist. Of course, he was stupid enough to give you a reason that is probably indefensible in court...good luck.

Dude server builds are the best part of an administrators job! You should be happy! I certainly would. Having to deal with fickle, destructive lusers was what drove me away from that career.

ok so here's the update. I walked into work this morning for the last leg of my '10' allotted hours, and asked my boss if I could speak to him privately..he says to me..NO I don't "DO" private conversations..I could NOT BELIEVE THIS GUY! ..so I say fine..and proceed to ask him if he is going to place me back in the position that I was originally hired for in september and at the hours I was hired for..He turns around..looks at me and says..WHY? gives me the *f*ck you* look and then walks away..so I go to personel to speak to HIS boss and I am told that "Jeff" was told by higher ups that he had to cut hours down in his area due to financial constraints at the business..when I inquired about WHY I was being stuck in with the geeky hardware guys AND NOT being allowed to do the job I was hired for.. I was told that I am "lucky" to have a job at all, and that I should NOT make waves...OMG I am so pissed..With that comment, I informed the company, that I am resigning..and that, that, was my 2 week notice...so the guy says to me..YOU HAVE TO GIVE 2 MONTHS NOTICE not TWO WEEKS, and if you don't we won't give you a good referal if you go to look for another job. Well guess what..I'm not going to be bullied by some over-achieving little twat. I at that point informed him that I quit RIGHT THEN AND THERE...Picked up my stuff and walked out of his office. By the time I got back to my desk to get the rest of my stuff, I already had JEFF there asking me to please hold out for 2 more months-until his budget comes through..because he REALLY NEEDS SOMEONE HELPING OUT WITH HIS HARDWARE CONTRACTS or he is going to get canned and he REALLY needs this job...As I grabbed my stuff..my comment to him was.."see you on the unemployment line!"..I smiled and walked out...Burned bridge? Probably. Legal action against the company-according my lawyer (whom I spoke to yesterday), probably not..because the other women are all afraid to speak up against the company and there really wasn't any "PROOF" that they are being biased.and that they could use the old excuse..we had to put her where we needed her kind of crap. It's certainly not fair to me or any of the other woman who work/worked there..but like I said...I'd rather work at walmart than put up with that nonsense..

I don't know about your state, but in California they couldn't give you a bad reference for quitting without notice. When they cut your hours , and therefore your pay or change your job you can quit immediately and it is the same as you being laid off. File for the sexual harassment anyway it might help someone later.
Check with your labor board to find out if it works the same way where you live!

What did your lawyer say? If he or she cares about your well being, he or she better have said more than you said in your post.

No good recommendation? That's ridiculous. If your lawyer didn't refer you to the EEOC (or equivalent state agency) then you were probably poorly served.

If you care at all about a recommendation, ask for one. If they refuse, then file an action with the EEOC and let them do an investigation. Let them know all you want is a good letter of recommendation, which is well deserved.

Unless you don't deserve a good letter of recommendation (excepting that quitting w/o notice).

FYI, the EEOC is a federal agency. They're on the internet, and in your white pages as Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.

HEY i'M a GOOD EMPLOYEE!...ok so here is what our att. said..basically asked me what had happened in the course of my employment..my salary, hours, benefits and wage packages etc..the basic stuff..then asked me pertinant facts about the job I was hired for..we went over alot of the crap that I've been dealing with there-such as..being moved out of my position to the other..and how the other fems were being treated equally as ****ty as me..he asked me if I could prove that they did it intentionally - moving us females out of our spots-WITHOUT them having covered their asses prior to them doing so..(which I really could not), and if I had taken any kind of notes-with dates, remarks, times etc..and if I had warned my boss at any time that he was being discriminatory and that I had planned on taking action if it continued..(which I didn't foresee me having a REAL problem with this guy at the time he said half the crap he said so the answer to that was of course-no)..He also said that Unless the other women were willing to make statements regarding this boss, that basically it would be me against the machine...and though I COULD fight it-the fight would be long, exhausting, and expensive for me,and possibly not even turn up in my favor due to the fact that the other women are indeed afraid of loosing their jobs and won't give statements against this guy..He also said that it's a fact that when an employee makes a case against their former employer-regardless of the reason-they (the employee) immediately becomes THE WORST employee the company has ever had..they blackball you, falsify records, etc etc to make them look saintly and make you look like an ass.He asked me if i was willing to go through all this...risk having my good name and good work history ruined by these jerks and of course the fact that if I did continue to pursue any kind of action that may or may not have ended up in court-would certainly have been a deterrant to other employers wanting me on their payrole for fear of the same happening to them.WE DID discuss other options, and he offered various solutions and other agencies I COULD speak to(the equal opportunity people, and a few others)-if I want to drag this out even further..as far as them not giving me a good recommedation..he said not even to worry..Idle threats he said..because they want to not have to hire someone else to do their crappy work for the next two months until their new budgets come through-and this way it would have been easier for them than to take on a new hire..As far as me quitting..he said.."do what you have to do, I've advised you, but I cannot make the deciscion for you.." and then off the record (because he is also not only our att. but a good friend)he told me he'd walk out too..no question about it. He also told me that the chances of them giving a hard time to the other women for a while will probably be slim for a while (while they cover their asses and be GREAT GUYS to work for right.)Anyway..after discussing with Mr.Melon, I decided the best thing I could do was to try and go through the chain of command, state my complaints in hopes that something would be done (which it was not)..and that if that didn't happen-my next option would be whatever seemed best at the time. Which-was walking out. Oh well..no love lost on this end if you know what I mean. I just hope the other women get the balls to do the same as I did..and walk out and jack them up a bit. The bastards.

Woo hoo! Good for you. The market's bad, but it's not so bad that you need to put up with that kind of environment.

Also, speaking as a hiring manager for an IT staff, I NEVER ask former employers for a reference for an ex-employee. I rely on the references given by the candidate (and more importantly, how they do in the interview). So don't worry about them not 'giving you a good recommendation'. You'll probably never need it.

Two months notice! Ha ha! At least you can have the satisfaction of knowing that you left them hanging.

That's cool that you were able to do that. I wish I would have the guts to do something like that, if I needed to.
