I would recommend the Epson Perfection 610. I bought it for $100 on buy.com. It costs a little more than the Acer's and such, but the quality and speed is fantastic. It also beats out the Umax's and HP's that cost more at lower res.

Well what price range are you willing to spend in the first place? The best scanners IMHO are UMAX and HP's. But epsons are also decent supposedly, not sure myself since I've never tried them out.

Urgh, they suck donkey nuts. Broke down 3 times, exchanged it each time, then I said screw it, and purchased a UMAX Astra 2000P (a LONG time ago, I think it was what, 2 years ago now?). Anyway, it's great..

If there are 3 areas HP does well in, it's Ultrasounds, Printers, and Scanners.

I bought 7 different El Cheapo models of scanner before finally shelling out $200 for my HP 4200C. I only needed a basic 9600x9600 scanner, but didn't want to pay a lot. I tried USB and scsi types, but some didn't like my Adaptec 2940UW or some had horrible software. UMAX is supposed to be a great scanner, but on my 2nd attempt at launching the scanning software I got a GPF and Invalid Page Fault so bad that I had to reinstall my OS.

Don't really worry about the "claimed" resolution. Most HDs can't even hold a 19.2K scan. HP uses quality optics and all their 30 bit and 36 bit scanner work well. The key is they are very stable drivers and software. Oh, the software provided by HP is also suffiecient for most intermediate uses.

If you are willing to spend $100-$150 get the 4200C with USB connection. Pick the model based on what software you need as they bundle differently. I personally don't think the 5200C is worth the extra $ unless you have a some serious scanning needs.

Oh, might want to have at least 128MB RAM minimum before scanning or you'll cry with pain. I'm running on 384MB now and still crawling on a 10K RPM SCSI and Piii-600.

I'm not putting down other cheaper scanners. They probably scan as well, if not better than the HP. I've just never had a cheap scanner work on my machine for more than a week without causing some crash or conflict. Maybe I run too much software....

I actually have the 630U model and so far it's worked great. The scanner is compact and produces very nice, fast scans for its size. Software is a bit lacking but I do all my work in Photoshop anyways. And the way the LIDE technology works prevents good scans of 3D objects but I don't do much of that either. There's a digital camera for that type of work.

Scanners are tough. I recently bought the cheapest HP out there, the 3200C. Its slow, B&W is really good, colour is OK, but for $40, I don't expect much more. As with most things, you get what you pay for.
