Thread: Deal on Linux Modem?

  1. #1

    Question

I'm not sure how many responses I'll get to this, but I thought I'd give it a shot..

Anybody know of any cheap Linux-Compatible modems? External/PCI Internal is all the same to me, but Internals are usually cheaper..

    Danke!

your best bet is to try redhat.com and see what modems are in their supported list and buy according to that externals are very compliant and very many internal isa's are too
NO winmodem type modems will work in linux...hehe i had a nice 56k "pre dsl" that worked beautifully in nix but i only know the chip was a rockwell dunno brand of modem

any modem can be made to run under linux... even winmodems. the trick is knowing how to disable the plug-and-play characteristic of the modem if present. this varies from modem to modem and can be very difficult. the process may involve recompiling the kernel, so it's almost easier to buy a linux compatible modem.

I've had good luck with SupraExpress modems (not SupraMax, those are winmodems). Have an internal that works with Win98, WinME, WinNT 4, Win2k, Linux, Beos, etc. Actiontec also sells modems that come with linux drivers (though I doubt you need the drivers, should work pretty much out of the box). Most ISA modems work fine, but there's a few that don't (I have a USRobotics ISA modem that is actually a winmodem).
