    Northridge 1994 Quake Causing Shocks

    Tuesday January 29, 2002 1:00 PM

SIMI VALLEY, Calif. (AP) - More than a dozen small earthquakes, all believed to be aftershocks of the deadly 1994 Northridge quake, rattled a wide section of Southern California but caused no injuries, authorities said.

The first of the quakes, with a magnitude of 4.2, struck just before 10 p.m. Monday and was followed minutes later by quakes of magnitude 3.9 and 3.8.

Over the next five hours, there were at least 18 more quakes, measuring 2.9 magnitude or less. Authorities said there were no reports of damage or injuries.

Carlos Pena, a manager of a Denny's restaurant near the center of town, said no pots or pans fell during the shaking, but patrons became uneasy.

``The customers got a little panicky,'' Pena said. ``Most of them stood up and tried to get to the cash register to pay quickly, and one girl couldn't wait and she started to make, kind of like, screaming noises.''

All the quakes centered six to seven miles northeast of Simi Valley, which is about 35 miles northwest of downtown Los Angeles.

Seismologist Lucy Jones of the U.S. Geological Survey in Pasadena said all the quakes could be classified as aftershocks to the magnitude-6.7 Northridge quake in 1994, which caused more than $15.3 billion in damage and killed 72 people. About 114,000 homes and buildings were damaged.

There is no reason to believe the latest quakes are a precursor to a bigger quake, Jones said.

``There's nothing about this that tells us, `Oh, now we need to experience bigger in the next few days.' We had a very similar aftershock back in February,'' she said.

thanks for posting mojo, so we know the magnitudes. i felt them. my GF and i were watching TV. at that point you could tell who was from out of state in the dorms cuz about 3 or 4 people started freaking out. everyone else was just sitting there like "whatever, this is not even worth getting up for." it was funny.

Aftershocks? To a quake that occured 8 years ago? Someone needs to get off the crack pipe.
More likely they were compared in magnatude to the aftershocks of the '94 quake. The reporter just has their head too far up their butt to know what he is talking about.
A 4.2 is a small shake. Anything under 4.0 isn't worth mentioning. Earthquakes happen all the time, all over he world. They are no big deal.

I didn't even know we had an earthquake until the announced it on the news.... and Dopey looked at me like I was crazy , cuz he felt it, but didn't say anything if I didn't, because I would have freaked out.

Out of staters are so funny during earthquakes. They act like the world is ending. The following is provided for any out of staters that hapen to be in Cali during a quake:
The best thing to do durring most quakes is nothing, unless you are near a large window or under a powerline, then you should move. I remember when I was in 6th grade, we were taking a timed test. A long rolling quake started it was somewhere around a 4.0. The teacher yelled for everyone to get under their desks, we looked at him like he was stupid and kept doing the test.
For a large quake (6.5) or above you probably want to stay well away from powerlines and any glass or hanging objects. You will know it is 6.5 or above when objects start bouncing around and falling off walls and countertops.

8 and above: ok, your screwed.

I've lived in Cali all my life and I can say that most earthquakes, 4 and under, are interesting additions to the day. Even 5's and 6 can be cool, but when you are in a 7 like I was in back in the day in Calexico, California, that's another story. When buildings start to crumble around you, it's a little hard to be nonchalant(sp).

Quakes are not a bad thing. They just are. No huricanes or twisters, just an occational shake. It's not a big deal.

I'll take hurricanes over earthquakes any day of the week!! At least with a hurricane you get notice and can move. I am not partial to everything around me starting to shake without any notice.

I am sure y'all will get a kick out of this. I have been living out in California for a little over 3 years now. The first earthquake (out here), I didnt even notice, because I was, shall we say, indisposed. The bed shaking at the time did seem out of the ordinary. The second earthquake, I was watching Leno and all the sudden my entire house started shaking. I jumped up to see what idiot drove a truck into the side of my house. My fiance was rolling on the ground because of how far I jumped and what my first instinct was to check for.

As for my preference of Hurricanes, I have been through a lot of them, including Andrew, and truthfully they are not that bad if you are prepared. Most houses are built to stand up to a category 5 or stronger; and if you installed the right kind of glass, then you're perfect. You can see them coming, and its really cool to walk outside during the eye.
Welcome my son, welcome to the machine...Where have you been? It's alright we know where you've been....

Hey, I almost had a vase fall on my head during a 4.0 tremor, so they can be dangerous.

Oh, and as far as structural stablity goes, any bulding 2 stories or shorter, and most wooden structures are very resistant to earthquakes. It is because they can give without breaking or losing their center of gravity.

Yeah, it (and frequently does) happen. Usually though, the ones that happen much later are so weak that nobody mentions them. Come on you wimps. I slept through the Northridge earthquake (I used to live around the east LA area).
