Thread: Why am I at only 60Hz in Win2000 in games?

    Question Why am I at only 60Hz in Win2000 in games?

    On my Radeon AIW (32M Radeon)…

    When I play OpenGL and (some) Direct3D games in Win2000 (Half Life, Tribes2, Serious Sam) the refresh of the monitor is set to 60Hz. Even when I set the graphics to the same settings as my desktop 1000x700x32bpp, I still get 60Hz. My monitor supports 100Hz at that resolution.

    I couldn’t find any settings in the OpenGL and D3D settings tab in the graphics properties, so I was wondering if anyone knew how I could change this to be an optimal setting , or the setting of the desktop. I would rather not use powerstrip. Also, the same games in Win98 do not do this.

    I’m running version 6018 of the radeon drivers. I’m fairly new to playing games in Win2000..I always used to dualboot.

    Thanks in advance.

    This is a Microshaft problem.

    Direct3D games are easy.
    Start menu-->Run-->dxdiag
    On the More Help tab Click Override (it talks about DirectDraw)
    Put in the value you want for Direct3D games.

    For quake engine games you can type in a command.

    Why not use PowerStrip? http://www.entechtaiwan.com/ps.htm

    With my Radeon AIW, I open the display properties, click settings tab, click advanced button, click adapter tab, then click "List All Modes" button. This should give you control over every "valid" refresh rate, even ones not supported by your video card/monitor configuration. Or as sbp said, you can also use PowerStrip which is the best tool i can think of for most setting with video cards.

    ATi RefreshFix v0.95 beta released

    "Version 0.95 beta of the ATi RefreshFix program has been released. Win2k/XP users who don't like to play all their games at 60Hz will find this utility very helpful."

    I haven't tried it out. If anyone tries it out, get back to us on how it works.

    Nice looking...

    sbp: The Refreshfix, although ripe with poor spelling and grammar (Russian), seems to work great. I can now play games in 1000x700 at 100Hz. Plus, I no longer get sheer lines from having a framerate better than the refresh of my monitor. Very cool.
