Computer Price War underway, and WE all win!

Dell has been QUITE SUCCESSFUL in its attempt to win the hearts and minds -- and wallets -- of the computer-buying public, to the extent that one in four PCs purchased today is a Dell. One of the big losers in this has been Gateway, whose sales nose-dived. Now, Gateway has decided to regain this lost market share any way they can. Among these ways: advertising. Expect to see a flood of Gateway commercials on TV (I saw my first tonight). Also among these ways: PRICE CUTS. Gateway is going head to head with Dell on pricing, and Dell is sure to respond. And with these two 500# gorillas both cutting prices to the bone, the other "me, too" players will have to come along... as will the ma and pa system builders. They won't be able to sell their system for $1,200 when a comparable Dell can be had for $600!

To see the opening salvos in this new price war, visit the two sites.

Gateway is offering a $100 price cut on their Gateway 300L model, now $600 with:

    • Micro-Tower Case
    • Intel® Celeron™ Processor 1.2GHz
    • 128MB SDRAM
    • Integrated Intel® 3D Graphics
    • 20GB Ultra ATA 100 hard drive
    • 20X min./48X max. CD-ROM drive
    • 15" Color Monitor (13.8" viewable)
    • Integrated 10/100 Ethernet
    • Microsoft® Works Suite -
    Including Microsoft® Word and Encarta
    • Microsoft® Windows® XP Professional

While Dell is offering their entry-level configuration of the Dimension 2100 Series for $499 with free double memory and free upgrade to a 16x CD-RW:

    • Intel® Celeron™ Processor 1.1GHz
    • 256MB SDRAM
    • 20GB hard drive
    • 16x/10x/40x CD-RW Drive
    • 10/100 PCI Fast Ethernet NIC
    • Integrated Intel 3D AGP Graphics
    • SoundBlaster 64V PCI LC Sound Card
    • Microsoft® Windows® XP Home Edition
    • Microsoft® Works Suite 2002 with Money 2002 Standard

Look for life to get INTERESTING over the next couple of months!

Nowhere on the Dell site does it say free double memory upgrade or free upgrade to 16x CD-ROM. So where is the link that refers to those freebies?

Looks like they have changed the deal to double HARD DRIVE instead of double memory, and free CDRW on just one model. I use the "small business" link from the home page... seems to have slightly better deals than the "personal" link.

All current DELL HOT DEALS (ie, special offers like the HD and CDRW) are shown here:

lol this is the third time i've read this post, from 3 different boards, thanks though bigdoggie. But you must remember there are a lot of us who can just buy the parts and build the computers ourselves. But hey, this is a good thing.

    The deal evolves!

Now, on the Dimension 2100, you get free doubling of hard drive size(20G --> 40G) and free upgrade from CDROM to 16x CDRW.

But it looks like the price had crept up to $549.00. This is in the "small business" section, where the best deals seem to live.

It will be interesting to flip back and forth between the Dell and Gateway sites for the next month or so.

sho.gun, it's called the "tell them three times" rule.

Can you really save much building your own system anymore? About 10 years ago, when I used to build my own systems, you could save a ton of money. The last time I bought a new computer (about 1.5 years ago) it just wasn't worth the trouble of assembling components.

I'm really looking forward to the lower prices. I feel bad for the people trying to sell their old PII/233 in the local classifieds for $750!

I think that it is not just about getting a system for cheap. I think you are right when you say that a pre-built system can be had for cheaper than building one yourself, but the quality of components won't be there. Sure, it might cost me an extra $100 or so to build my own, but mine will run faster and be more upgradeable.

Sure, if I were going to get a computer for my parents or a friend who just wants a web surfer, I'll buy a pre-built computer. If, however, I'm going to work on it myself, I would rather just build it.

Also, one more thing that fits into the equation is that it is cheaper to upgrade than to buy a whole new comp. If, say, I built a computer today, and spent quite a bit more than the price of a Dell or Gateway, chances are, I could keep that computer up to date while spending less money on upgrades than I would with a pre-built. So it all works out in the end.

Ladogaboy, I'm not sure I understand your argument for building it yourself... what about those places that configure the computer to your liking? I havn't bought from this place myself, but http://www.digirex.com seem to have pretty decent deals (as does accessmicro on barebones+videocard).
BTW, anyone know of even cheaper places that will customize computers from quality parts for cheap? I'm on the lookout for a new system

That is part of my point. Places that customize a system to your liking almost always charge more for the components than you would pay if you bought them on your own. Also, you have to remember that you will be paying for labor as well.

I checked out the site that you linked, and the prices aren't that great. Go to www.newegg.com and compare the prices. BTW, Newegg has one of the best reputations for both price and reliability.

Anyway, the other part of the argument is that once you build a system for yourself, it is both easier and cheaper to upgrade.

I know the prices are lower at newegg, but they don't put together the system for you, digirex has that included in their price. Mid and high end computers come out at pretty decent prices actually.

Yes, but labor is one of the reasons why building it yourself is cheaper.

They are gateways and dells. Great if you want to upgrade anuallly.

Better of building your own. Last i checked, gateway had a life span of like 1.2 years, along with emachines. Dell had them beat by 1.3 years.

    I'll save my cash
