    The Irony of Burn-Proof...

    Just a little rant...

We all know that nearly every one of the lightning-fast newer CD-RW drives has some form of Buffer Underrun protection.

Those new recorders will record a CD in 5 minutes or so, eh? And they have the buffer underrun protection so that you can use your computer while burning and not make coasters... right?

The irony of that is this... I can wait 5 minutes without using my computer while a disc burns. Where was the Burn-Proof, though, when I had to sit and wait 40-70 minutes?

THAT's when I needed the Burn-Proof so I could use my comp while burning one of those $3 discs.

It was in the mind of some engineer, just waiting to break free!

We had to wait a while for the technology though, because he had to burn some CDs first.

Well, wait until they start making DVD-R discs that hold more than 4.7 gigs.

How long does it take right now, though?

HP's DVD burner burns at 2.4x (or 3.32MB per second). To burn 1GB of data would require five minutes. So no, it shouldn't take 40 minutes.

Still, 20-25 minutes is nothing to write home about.

I see what you guys are talking about. However, I thought the primary reason for the BURN-Proof technology was to compensate for the speed increase in CD writers. The speed of the writers was getting so fast the some of the slower hard drives wouldn't be able to feed data fast enough. The fact that you're able to use your machine while it's burning was secondary.

Or am I totally off here?
