Hmm.... Perhaps it would be a bad idea for me to go to Vegas this weekend. My friend was there for Chinese New Year a year or two ago and it was insanely packed.

That's why I asked whether it was this weekend (the one we are currently in) or the upcoming weekend (the weekend right after Valentine's day).

lil rugrats like you piss me off on chinese new years. if all you care about is money you shouldn't get any "foombows"

just my opinion...it taints the whole chinese new years celebration. every year the lil kids gets worse. as for myself, i'm just grateful if i even get just one. i have red envelopes all the way from 1990...like a 2 inch stack. keep 'em for good luck.

I think the whole idea of red packets is pretty cool. It gives the kids a bit to look forward to every year. It gets them all excited. I wouldn't get mad at lil' rugrats for wanting the money, just as long as they know the significance of it, and know where it comes from. Its a cycle, in many cases when they get married, they'll be the ones giving out the lei-see.

there are two different sayings for the red packets.. in either language...

hong bao.. is just red packet

lei-see is like another way of sayin it... but he was saying cantonesse there tho..

Yup, what he said! =P Cantonese is what I grew up with, but I still do understand hong bao. =) I dunno bout anyone else, but the dialects seem pretty similar that I understand it, and am able to make a transition. I just have a problem with speaking =P I am a (in cantonese) toe-ji-jai.

    Happy chinese new year.

I dunno how everyone else celebrates but we have two dinners and of course the hoom bow. We had a closing year dinner and we are going to have an opening new year dinner.

The dinner we had was absolutely maddening. This chinese lady brought in her co-workers (about 50) to the same restaurant as my family. And everytime they toasted or another dish came to their table they would yell out 'Gung Hay Fat Choy'. It was amusing the first few times but at 7 dishes per table and at least 5 tables...hearing 35 times plus everytime they made a toast was maddening. And their chinese was getting worse...at the end it was like 'Go home fat boys' or something. Ugh.

I've noticed that as you grow older, not only do you get less money, you have to start giving it out too.

But in theory, you should have a better job by then, right?

I remember when I used to get fat stacks as a little kid for new years. I would easily clear anywhere between $500-$1000. But, what the heck do you do w/ $1000 when you're 8?

I actually attended some of the Chinese new year festivites going on here in Calgary.... lion dances, martial arts demonstrations, etc. It was actually pretty fun considering I'm not Chinese.
