    Garmin GPS Questions

    thinking about buying this:

    http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI...tem=1331297316

however, i know NOTHING about GPS units. i know garmin sells memory cards and additional cd rom maps, but i was wondering if data could be uploaded w/o a memory card. reason i ask is because i stumbled upon detailed canadian maps and i'd like to buy the gps for under $200 and not shell out another $100 for a mem card...and still use the canada maps.

also, how accurate are these things out of the box w/o detailed maps??

what B&M stores sell these so i can check one out?

i'm mainly interested in personal experience with uploading maps and the general usefullness of such a unit.

    thanks!

Looking at the Garmin site, it seems like the "Clearance!" item they're selling on Ebay is pretty old, black & white and a refurb. They're selling a Streetpilot 1 and Garmin's latest in the series is 5 now. It's likely you may have difficulty finding stuff for it.

As for me, I have a Geode springboard module for my Handspring Prism and it's worked out great for me.
    I think over again
    My small adventures, my fears.
The small ones that seemed so big,
For all the vital things I had to get and to reach.

And yet there is only one great thing, the only thing:

To live to see the great day that dawns,
And the light that fills the world.

i was thinking a visor and a gps might be a better route...

i'll look into the geode. does it have canada maps? also, how much are additional maps?

I was thinking of going with the Visor/GPS-addon route too, but then I read the interview with the CEO of the company (on C|Net?). If I remember correctly, she basically said that they're getting out of the PDA business.

the way i see it...even buying a visor and a gps would be cheaper than a decent gps unit. even if handspring quits making PDAs, they use the PalmOS, so i wouldn't worry about picking one up.

i have a clie...drat. knew the sony elitist proprietary crap would come back to bite me. but my road trip partner has a visor...i'm thinkin the magellan gps, got 8/10 on cnet.
