SS: Apartment hunting coupled with everything else

Well my fiance and I have been out looking for apartments, but thus far we havent been able to find anything that we like for less than $1500! This is for a damn two bed room place, nothing special.

It is so annoying not to be able to find anything which is affordable. To top it all off, we are being penalized because we dont have 6 months of work history. Both of us have JD's and are just starting to practice (the reason why we dont have the work history is because we were students).

I mean its just completely unreasonable out here. Back in Florida I had a 3bd/3ba townhouse and it ran me $850 a month. Really nice place in an expensive development. So to pay almost twice as much for half the place, just seems wrong.

On top of that we are trying to get my fiance a new car, but without knowing the final cost of the apartment, we cant get the new car. This is driving me nuts. There is so much deceptive advertising out there!

For example: 2bd/2ba, 1048 sqft. from $1240 - we go there and the cheapest apartment that they even have (not just available, but have) goes for $1485! I dont know about you but $245 difference in what the cheapest advertised price and the real price is deceptive advertising. I dont think that the little asterik that says price may increase doesnt cover a change from the day after the publication comes out.

This is just wrong.

well, i don't live in southern ca, and if i wanted to get a studio apartment it would run me upwards of $1100 a month. and thats for a 500sf place.

so the deal is, if u want to live where everyone else does, you got to fork out the dough. is it more important for you to live in a cool area, or to pay less rent?

*btw my roomate's mom pays less then $500 for a three bedroom in buffalo, ny. and that is less then her (she pays the least out the 4 people who live w/ me cause she has no windows in her br.) portion of the rent. so you could always move there if u couldn't afford the rent in ca!

what does it matter? the last time i checked, lawyers were pretty well paid!

if you are inbetween jobs, suck it up and live someplace crappy for a few months. then move when u gots some more loot.

Ouch. I feel your pain. I live in the Bay Area, and when I was apartment-hunting a year ago, I could barely find 1bd apts for that price. (Thanks for nothing, dot-commies! )

Styleee's advice about signing a short-term lease or renting month-to-month sounds like the ideal solution. You two will be off and running in no time!

Put that JD to use and legal-speak your way into that $1200 apt by highlighting the differences in the "starting from" prices! *cough*false advertising*cough*

If you are looking in Poway that's what you are going to pay.

A friend of mine has a 2 bdrm 1 1/2 bath place in San Diego just north of 70th and University for around $850. It's pretty nice, neighborhood is mixed, it's not a bad place. Want me to ask him if there are any vacancies?

In SoCal you pay dearly for the neighborhood you are in.

I couldn't believe he was paying only $850 for about 1000 sq feet.

Grimm- Unfortunately we are trying to remain up here because of job constraints. But thanks for the offer, if we change our mind I will let you know.


We may just end up going with a 6 month lease at a place that we find sort of acceptable. We figure that in a few months we should have more disposable income that we can use to find a place that actually meets all of our criteria.

Damn, it is always amazing to me how cost of living varies. We just built a house recently. It is 3200 SF in one of the best neighborhoods and school districts in the area, we put a ton of upgrades in the house. Our nut on it is $1400 a month with taxes and insurance. We did put a pretty big down payment on it.

Our last rental was a 2100 SF 3 br 3 bath townhouse and it was 800 a month.

BUT I have to live in PA.

Let me guess... your trying to live in a populated area of California... SF, LA, SD are the major ones... most of the bunghole ripping ones are in the first two.... Most 2 bedrooms around here (LA/santa Monica) start at 1,000 bux.... that's with 1 bathroom, and that's not even saying it's all that big... just prepare to bend over and take it..
