    low fps in counterstrike

I have a geforce 2 mx-400, and when i play CS i only get about 25-30 fps, and when someone throws a smoke grenade it gets down to about 5-10. Someone told me that this was really low for my card, anyone know, or how I can get it higher, preferably without overclocking.

I know there's an option in the game to turn down the texture details, especially with that smoke grenade. When someone throws one of those you can tell everyone near it starts lagging like crazy.

in the console in counter-strike type
"fps_max" or "fpsmax" or "fps max"

I forgot the command, I think its the first one. It will tell you what the max fps is set at. If it's set low, change it to fps_max 75 or something.

That is probably NOT it because it's dipping way low with the 'nades. But worht a shot. The other thing to try is to goto your advanced properties in your display properties and make sure Anti Aliasing is turned OFF.

the thing i was talking about is called Draw faster software sprites, it's in the config menu. Supposedly, if you don't have that on, the Smoke nades won't slow you down as much.

Make sure you're not running in Software mode first. By defauly, Half Life will install itself to use Software. But switch it to OpenGL or Direct3D and you'll notice a sizeable increase in FPS as well as a much nicer picture

also, what drivers/os are u using?
There's been problems reported with geforce/winxp/opengl - like i do

stinkin, I had a good 100 fps (min 75) with win2k before the xp drivers came out on nvidia's website.

then I install xp, get the latest/suckiest drivers, and I can't get anything over 60
opengl craps out on me to so i gotta use directx

hmmmm, interesting attgig... i thought the slowdown i experienced since upgrading to winxp has related to the crappy Radeon64 drivers available for xp......

but i know before upgrading to xp, ATI released new win98se drivers and i experienced the same slowdown -- so i went back to older win98se drivers. So.....i still blame ATI's suck ass drivers!!! Im goin wit nvidia next go 'round!!! (besides, i wasnt satisfied with overall performance of the Radeon)

im using a p3 1ghz, I uninstalled the detonator drivers from nvidia, and then reinstalled teh origional drivers from my cd, now i get about 60 fps and 30 with a smoke nade. But why would the older drivers work better.

on your adapter settings try setting antialiasing to 2x, and in open gl settings turning off v-sync. I have a geforce ti200 and this raised my fps from 60 to 100 on cs.

that raised my fps another 10. Woohoo, I can actually play a game without it being all choppy, thanks. Its at about 70 now, from teh origonal 30, a few changes in drivers and settings can work wonders.
