One of the PhDs here at work is setting up a lab in Tanzania, and will need internet access. I'm thinking two-way satellite, but I'm not really sure where to start researching. Anyone have any links I could look at?

Why do ya need a sallite? Is this like in the middle of the desert?
The site for the new lab is several miles from any communications lines, and running lines is not an option. That's why I thought satellite.

tke a look....list of ISP provider....some are satellite....not going to be cheap/.///
How long is this lab going to be up? I'm just curious. I don't know much about the subject, but could satellites end up costing more over time than running a communications line?
Also, would there be a way of upping the range of a Wireless Access Point so that the lab could connect to the internet even miles away?
It is not enough to merely touch the face of god; you also must open your eyes so that you may see your palm.
Or ya can tell them to use their infraRed on the cell fone to go on the internet ....

Getting a phone line strung in remote areas of Tanzania can be an extremely $$$ thing, and then it still might take years after they take your money before it ever gets done. (I have an acquaintance there that has been dealing with this.)
stay low... keep moving...
this is a place where the locals would dig up and sell your copper wires!
A good solution would be to use satellite technology (MRSAT, EMSAT, ACeS, etc...)
This will give you a 64K ISDN like channel. The data is pretty good. You get a REAL 64K of data out of it.
Try looking into things like this: http://www.globalcoms.com/Pages/vsat..._terminals.htm
The phones would look like this: http://www.satcomms.com/images/portable.jpg

Try here as well. This is another listing of manufacturers that may be able to get you up and running.
