    Exclamation Help Help Quasi-network Prob!!

Ok, so I can connect to the internet no prob. Can use email, Forte Agent (newsgroups), weatherbug (go figure), but I CAN'T use programs that "auto detect" my internet connection like, Morpheus (GNUTELLA), Microsoft Messenger, FrontPage (for webpage uploads), and autoupdates for programs like realplayer, etc. HELP HELP HELP!!!!

I'm connected to a cable modem through a linksys router. The other computer in the house has no problems connecting. I have a linksys network card and am running XP (so is the other computer).

    Any ideas?

    THANKS in advance

do you have the XP built in firewall turned on?

Since one computer is ok, but not the other, it was the first thing I thought of...something on your system is configured to block certain ports.

I wish that were the problem, but it's not. When I try to log into Messenger it says, "We were unable to sign you in to .NET Messenger Service, Possibly because of a problem with the service or with your Internet connection. Please make sure that you are connected to the Internet."

That's the same type message I get from other programs.... The old morpheus would work, but the new one and other clones won't.

how long has this been going on? recently? might be a time to use System Restore. You could manually configure those programs, but I'm buggered as to why some would work, some would not, unless an admin setting was played with, or some service has been disabled in services.msc.

I have had these same problems before with my linksys router. You need to make yourself the DMZ host or use the forwarding settings and open up the ports that all these programs use. You cant however just open up 1-25000. You have to figure out which ports you actually need by visiting the programs sites' and then grouping close ones and opening more or less just ports you need. Do access the Linksys router page, point your browser to 192.168.1.1 and let the username blank and the password is "admin". Then make your corrections and it should work. I would suggest doing the DMZ host first. Also if neither work, if it some kinda option you have set on your computer that is blocking everything, possibly the built in firewall but you already know about that.
