    from anandcrap

    Dear Xxxxx Xxxxxx,

Thank you for shopping at buy.com.

We recently received and shipped your order #XXXXXXX, which included a
    $50.00 coupon.

As we state on the coupon web page, this coupon requires a minimum
purchase of $500.00. Because your total order was less than this minimum
amount you have two options: 1) return your order as soon as possible for
a refund of the amount your were charged, or 2) respond to this email with
your written permission to charge your account for the amount of the
    coupon.

To return your product, you will need to obtain a return merchandise
authorization number from our web site. Please read our return policy at
    http://www.us.buy.com/support/returns for return instructions.

Thanks again for shopping with us. We look forward to serving you in the
    future.

    Sincerely,

    buy.com

Well one solution..I know it's nasty, but still $50 is too much (at least for me)
You can call your CC and tell them to change your CC no. (tell any crap..u lost it..) Well the cc ppl don't charge for new cc and they change the last 4 digits of your cc.
But u have to live without cc for 5-7 days.
Think....is this worth $50....As far as i am concerned, my order got cancelled, but if i was in this situation, i would have gone for the cc cancellation.

How can u take the bite once it is inside my mouth.....

Dude, I'd call up BUY.COM and dispute it - you ordered something, they shipped it, transaction final. If they screwed up, it's their fault! It was their fault in letting the product get out of their hands, and they can't expect people to obtain special return slips and whatnot because of their error. I can't believe they'd try something like this.

I wouldn't have had a problem with them cancelling my order.

But this is 10 times worse. There is no way I can get the merchandise to them.....
I guess I'm just not going to reply and see what happens.......I dunno........

I wonder what they do if you used an e-account? I only had $20 in there and the 6 DVD's cost $18. I want to see them try and bill me for $120.

They can't charge your cc without your permission, so what are they gonna do, sue all of us? They only offer you 2 options, either send it back or give them permission to charge your card. I say don't do either.

Did buy.com include a paper receipt in your orders that listed a final price?

If so, they really have no options. You could beat them if they charge your credit card, if they turn it over for collections you can still produce your receipt. They could sue, but that would be far too expensive over a mere $50 and they still couldn't win because of the receipt.

You made an offer, they signified their acceptance of the offer by shipping the product. Abusing the $50 coupon was probably unethical, but there is nothing they can really do.

For all of you who got their products:
Do not return the product or reply to the email.
Instead, call your cc company and tell them you lost your card & have them change the number.
Do not let buy.com charge your credit card. They shipped the items; they are SOL.
I do not intend on returning my product or giving them permission to charge my card. As a safety measure, I had my card number changed.
They can take their ultimatum and stick it where the sun don't shine. They won't screw me a la Staples.com.

    SOL=sh*t out of luck
also, while in a pure legal sense buy.com probably can't get you to pay the money, unethical actions can be considered in court, so in the end they may still win (i hope that just made sense)

Man you guys. . . Just trying to be a little too greedy. You should be ashamed of yourself. Trying to take advantage of a great online store. Its people that try to take of advantage of companies this way that increase prices. This is beyond the got deals way in my humble opinion. Its one thing to get great deals that are legit, but another thing when you are trying to abuse a company by using a coupon that you know is not "working" properly and still using it. And when the company realizes their mistake and tries to fix it so that they don't lose money, some whining babies start complaining how they don't get to rape the store. For those that want to steal, just save yourself the headache of online shopping by going to your local store and stealing it there. Guess what I'm trying to say is that you guys need to chill and realize that it was a good try at getting some free stuff, but it didn't work and so don't get pissed off.

I think that e-mail was just one of those things they HAD to send out to cover their a$$e$. So that if ever in the future something like this happens with a coupon, we will think twice about doing it after reading that e-mail.

I think this is a soft (unenforcable) threat. I didn't get in on it, but still... I understand them sending this out. If they get some of the $$$ back, good for them. If not, oh well. All it cost them was an e-mail. You know?

I think it was MaggieOK that mentioned something about using a receipt to dispute your charges..well, doesn't the receipt also say the coupon you used? (ie. in this case, $50 off $500). Personally, my order didn't come in, so I have nothing to worry about..

I find the "2) respond to this email with
your written permission to charge your account for the amount of the
coupon." part of the offer interesting also. It seems that they will charge you the amount of the coupon. Does that mean they are gonna charge you $500.00. hehe I think not.
