Do all mp3 CD players play 192kbps mp3s?

Before I replace my CD changer in my car...Do CDplayers that claim to play mp3 CD play 192kpbs mp3s?

I don't see why it wouldn,t, I mean cda has a faster transfer rate than 192.

i know some that only play 128 and lower. i was looking at some a while ago for my sister and saw a lot of cheap namebrands which dont play over 128kbps. this was before some bigger names started making cd players with mp3 capabilities. if you are buying them from the store, the outside of the box should say it, but if you are buying it online and the retailer doesnt say on the site, check the manufacturers website.

As a technician and scientist, I don't care what *should* happen. I know what *should* happen. Most manufacturers don't print that their player *won't* play 192 mp3s, but many do that don't have it listed in their specs.

This forum has been a great place to discuss hardware, including sharing information about what models are better/worse than others.

bires, i reread your first post and realized you wanted a car player, not a portable player. so i thought about Crutchfield. they dont have the mp3 specs listed under the units specs, but if you go to the "detailed info" tab when looking at a product page and go down to "MP3 Playback" it will tell you all sorts of info.

heres an example from a Pioneer DEH-P7400MP head unit:

MP3 Playback: This unit can play MP3 files recorded on CD-ROM, CD-R, and CD-RW discs in ISO9660 Level 1/Level 2, Joliet, and Romeo formats. This unit is compatible with constant and variable bit rates from 16kbps to 320kbps. During MP3 playback, the following functions are available:

Folder up/down
Track up/down
Track audible search
Folder Repeat Play: repeats the current folder
Track Repeat Play: repeats the current track
Disc Repeat Play: repeats the entire disc
Random Play: all tracks in all folders are played in random order
Folder Random Play: all tracks in the current folder are played in random order
Folder Scan Play: plays the first 10 seconds of each folder
Track Scan Play: plays the first 10 seconds of each track in the selected folder
Pause
ID3 Tag Display: displays ID3 Tag information for tracks that have been recorded with ID3 tag information

plus if they dont have it listed you can call and ask a sales rep the info. ive called them lots of times and they were always very helpful and thorough.

maybe i was too hasty in my response Bires. I didn't expect manufacturers to release any mp3 cd player that wouldn't play 192 kb/s. None of mp3s would work. Hope you find what you're looking for.

thats not exactly how it works, cd audio has a very solid standard, you cant really change it much (no SACD doesnt count). but mp3 is not exactly standard, nor is it exactly mainstream. its not like you can go into any house and find an mp3 player in the stereo, nor will you be able to walk into a music store and find any mp3's for sale. so when manufacturers build a cd player, you can play cds on them, but when they build an mp3 player they have to build in an mp3 decoder into the player. Cantacuzene, this is why just because cd's have a faster transfer rates, mp3 players might not be able to decode it.
verve, if you went to an electronics store and bought a progressive scan dvd player with dolby digital 5.1, dts, and 7.1 sound options, but you only had speakers built in to the tv which are capable of 2 channel stero and interlaced video, would you be able to see the picture and hear the sound? of course you would, you just wouldnt get the full effect of the crisper image and 7.1 channels of sound because you dont have the equipment required to play it. same with mp3, if it is encoded at 320kbps and your decoder will only play 128, you will only hear 128kbps sound quality.

FWIW, my Kenwood MP8017 (I think) plays my 192s and 160s just fine. If I remember correctly, however, it wasn't terribly fond of VBR MP3s.
