Thread: Staples, no rebate with coupon?

    Staples, no rebate with coupon?

Can anyone confirm nor deny this. Did Staples recently change their polity to disallow rebates if a coupon was used? Here is a quote from "another board"

"I had to call CS to find out what happened to the order. Then she informed me I would not receive the rebate because of the coupon. I got very angry because I could go into a grocery store to get a store sale and use a coupon and do a rebate if I wanted to. They said that is the policy. It will let you checkout but the CS is telling me the rebate will be refused when I mail in."

Here is another quote from "another board"

"The CS is saying that the manufacturer WILL NOT pay the $40 rebate because they will see on the receipt that a coupon was used. They recently had a meeting and this is the policy. I talked to a supervisor who said I would not receive the $40 rebate on this item."

That is just not true! I got the Visioneer scanner for $99.95 and applied a $20 coupon and sent in for the $80 rebate (I had to buy rubber bands to get it over $100!). Yesterday, less than 5 weeks later, I got the $80 rebate check (it was a postcard if you can believe that!!!).

    YMMV, of course.

That deal was a while ago. From reading the above posts at the "other forum", I am led to believe there has been a policy change. I am wondering if anyone out there can confirm nor deny this rumor.

Red face Staples ALWAYS says this...

Staples ALWAYS seems to huff and puff about coupons and rebates. They told me flat out on the phone I wouldn't get my $80 scanner rebate if I used a coupon, and sure enough, I got the rebate check, as did everyone I know who ordered the scanner and sent their forms in.

I'm not saying things couldn't have changed, I am saying they've cried wolf about this issue so much I'm very unlikely to believe anything some random person posts on a message board until someone scans a letter from Staples rejecting a rebate for this reason.

end of an era is coming....

....its only a matter of time before these stores realize that we're taking them...

...personally, I'll have a lot more money to spend, since I won't be buying extra UPSes and Scanners that I don't really need.

Well, I was just asking for the rebate status (visioneer $80 rebate).. and CSR put me on hold for awhile, and later on that Staples CSR threaten me for saying... "we'll let this rebate go through, but it will be the last time.. all the high up knew about this..." duh.

Why would you call CSR to check rebate status? Just go to rebate center.

This story is like an Urban Myth. It keeps showing up when newer members read the fine print on the rebate forms. If anyone actually gets a post card that says "Sorry, this should have been your rebate but we researched your purchase and found that you used a coupon on your purchase and so you are not getting a rebate" let me know!

There is no way that Staples can refuse you to use a rebate. Most of these rebates go directly to the manufacturer and aren't even handled by Staples. I've never had a problem using a coupon and then sending in a rebate. Staples rebate policy can be found here:

    http://www.staples.com/help/default.asp?area=rebates

Now, it is true that they won't do a pricematch with another site AND allow you to use a coupon at the same time but that's a whole different scenario.

I did go to the rebate center, and everytime I checked, it showed up "processing"... and I am tired of this, so give them a call to see what's going on...

A tip for those doing rebates with Staples. Always register your rebate online at the rebate center, even if you make the purchase in the store. When you register it online you'll get a tracking number for your rebate. I've never had a problem with Staples rebates and I've always done them this way. Final count for 2001 Staples rebates: $2,543.55, so far for 2002: $1,162.18.
