Thread: G|A Will never be the same again :(

Unhappy G|A Will never be the same again :(

Well I enjoyed the pancake breakfast with Gabe, eventhough I had to eat and run. But I learned of some disheartening news from Apex. Apparently G|A will start using banner pop-ups on 4/7 to help pay for the bandwith we are all using. The way he described it, it should be kinda like what Slashdot did to its site.

So it shouldn't be too bad, but if that doesnt bring in enough revenue, he is also going to add pop-up windows (like that X10 crap).

Looks like a free G|A is over

Sorry to spill the news before you wanted to Apex
Am I alone here? Is that it?
Am I the only one who sees.

Maybe we can learn to be just like him.

Yeah, apex emailed me about this too. This sucks. He said he's going to use pop-ups from reputable vendors though. He mentioned ads for Amazon and Buy.com specifically. Oh well.

I don't think it would be bad. They need compensation for the effor they put into the site. Just a question though, why did you tell us before Apex wanted us to know?

So what's the big deal? We've been mooching off of Apex's generosity for the past couple of years, and if we have to see a few pop-up ads in order to keep this community alive, then so be it.

pop ups aren't that bad. i trust Apex to put up reputable adds for places i might be interested in. and for G|A, i'll take some time to click and makes them some money. i mean hell, i use this place for free so a few minutes a day of adds is worth it. i think G|A will be fine...

The folks who run this board are going to do what they can to keep the lights on and keep things going. If this is how they think they can do it then who am I to second guess that. I'm sure whatever they do it will be in good taste and non-invasive. I trust their judgement. It'll be okay.

So, so pessimistic. With 7,342 members you think this place is on the way out?

If people click on the ads, it works. People won't pay to put ads on your site if there are not enough impressions. If we have to click the ads to give money to Apex toe keep the site up, so what. It is better than giving money out of OUR pockets (even though I would do that), let other companies pay to keep the site up.

Most of the members and regular here are the kind of people who hate banner ads. We are not the type of people who usually will click on an ad that we see. I for one have learned to ignore pop ups and banner ads. I am not sure to what extent voluntarily clicking the ads will work.

just clicking ads doesnt usually work... most places also monitor how many purchases are made through a site

How about something like Slashdot runs, a voluntary subscription option?

Got|Apex is probably the one site on the net that I'd actually pay money for. Not that I'd pay a lot, but I'd be willing to pay something...

Ads annoy me, and I tend not to click through them because I have my own preferred vendors. I often feel a little guilty because I don't use the existing ad banners at all. But I'd like to do my part to keep Got|Apex around and in the black.

Are any other options being considered?

The good news is with cruelpupet gone, less bandwidth is used. Therefore no popup ads. And thats not a bad thing, thats a good thing.

Apex trusted a select few with information on the future of G|A. Cruel turns around and betrays the trust by revealing the information to the board.

a lesson to the younger folks here or anyone that has not learned something like this yet:

in the business world, or basically any job you ever have as long as you live, there will be times to talk, and times to stfu. an issue like this would be best told by staff and such, unless someone says otherwise. sorry doesn't always cut it. in fact...for a sensitive issue, "sorry" alone is pretty pathetic.

granted, this is not work for him or whatever. all the same, your work life often overlaps with your private life. if a person can't keep a secret, that person won't get too far in business. period. sorry to spoil it for anyone, but gossips tend to stay...below upper management.

ya, there are exceptions. i wouldn't bank on being an exception, tho. if someone runs a business such as this, and they tell you a secret...if you tell peeps that secret, then you're not trustworthy. and if someone trusts you with information of their business and you spout off, you're messing with their livelihood. can you imagine if one day you're shooting the schitt with someone you think you can trust and the next they're using it against you? bad form! maybe he meant well, but good intentions don't always make good outcome.
say "hi" to lumbergh for me

got ya, i've been pretty sick for the past couple of days so my head isn't 100% right now, it kicks in here and there but i guess i missed this.

I dunno how to react to this though, this info would publically be known anyway, One thing this site has taught me if there is some information that would be beneficial to other members then post it, that's how our deals work.

Passwird didn't deny it, although he's not banned (passwird i'm not crapping on you man, not at all you are a ok in my book )

    so i dunno
