cool, if i read correctly, it said it has its own sleep timer.. my ancient tv doesn't have one, so i usually just leave it on all night.. =) time to drop by the nearest radio shack.. (thought i'd never say that)

    the best radio shack deal...

...was when they clearanced their "tech torches." These were the coolest little butane-jet torches. They clearanced them for 99 cents. I bought 25.

    oh yeah...the remote...

...the shack page doesn't list the proper RCA product number, so I cant tell what model it is. I need to find a remote that can control both my Toshiba DVD and my Motorola Digital TV reciever. I own four "Universal" remotes-none of which can control both.

Motorola TV's became Quasar (Matsus.hita) in the early 70's (1970's). It's possible another company "bought" the old Motorola name and has been marketing their stuff under it. Look on the back of your Motorola and see if there's an FCC ID#. Then list it here and I'll see who really makes it.

Picked one of these up today. It will not work for my dvd player,,probably because it's built into a receiver. I'm taking it back tomorrow. $5 isn't a bad deal, but I would not pay the retail $15 for it. They also have a Radio Shack brand remote that has a backlit keypad and seems pretty nice, on sale for $15. I doubt that will work for my dvd player, but I may pick one up to check when I return this one.

man this is no deal, I went to get one, hoping to spend $5, ended up spending $25!!!! They suckered me into batteries, I needed some RCA cables to use my switcher now that I got a Gamecube, and of course I HAD to get the gold plated ones. These damn sales in stores are horrible on your pocketbook, and your ego when you get home and realilzed how much money you just gave Radio Shack. It was a dark day.

Quasar was Motorola's consumer electronics brand until 1974 when
they sold the whole unit to Matsus.hita. Now it's just another
nameplate in the Matsu- stable along with Panasonic.

Motorola bought General Instruments a couple years ago, and
post-year-2000 GI products carry the Motorola brand name.
My cable box has a Motorola nameplate but it's exactly
the same as my neighbor's, which has a GI nameplate.

A coworker just bought the Radio Shack unit, and it's not
clear if it will work with the digital cable box. I have an
RCA unit from a couple years ago that works with the GI
analog boxes, but not the digital.

The name Motorola can be used by totally different companies by purchasing the rights to the name. Motorola Pagers, TV's, Radios, Air Conditioners are all different companies.

It's quite common for an old retired name to come back in another form owned by a different company. For example:

    Admiral
    DuMont
    Philco
    Sylvania
    Westinghouse

have all retired from the TV manufacturing business but the names live on in other products made by offshore companies.

The FCC ID# which is attached to most consumer electronics items reveals the actual mfg. For instance, Philco VCR's may be manufactured by Shintom or Symphonic - whoever pays the royalty to use the name.
