    cancer in foods?

    if this is a repost....sorry.....

    http://msnbc.com/news/743063.asp?pne=msn

April 24 — French fries, potato chips, breads, cereal and other popular high-carbohydrate foods may contain high levels of a compound that probably causes cancer, according to an alarming study released Wednesday by Swedish food authorities. The carcinogen, called acrylamide, appears to form when carbohydrates are heated in a certain way, such as by frying potatoes or baking bread, researchers found.
    It's not the whole article....but it's a little crazy....

I don't think this'll stop anything though - the better you idiot-proof a system, the more impressive the idiot becomes.

Everyday, a hundred new concerns to be worried about. It's amazing we even make it past puberty.

Pretty much every type of food either causes cancer or has some other problem attached to it.

    Green beans are great IMO!

Anyway, there are two catalysts for cancer: carcinogens and co-carcinogens. Many foods contain them, and many foods don't. It just happens that some of the best tasting foods contain the most.

Also, there are really two things that determine how many carcinogens and co-carcinogens foods contain. One, is how many they naturally contain: foods high in fat/animal products contain a lot. The second determining factor is the way in which the food is cooked. For instance, certain vegetables are really good for you, but if you fry them or cook them over an open flame, the number of carcinogens and co-carcinogens present can be greatly increased.

I'm the same way. Well, not just about green beans. My yearly intake of veggies amount to what a normal person would eat in one serving of salad. Well, with the exception of the lettuce in sandwiches.

I wouldn't worry too much about acrylamide. I used to work with pure acrylamide and while I agree that it is nasty s#@t, 1) I'm still alive and 2) Foods has very very very little acrylamide in it. 3) Kinda cool point... eating carcinogens actually decreases your chances of getting cancer. Researchers long ago tried to get mice to get cancer by feeding them carcinogens. The carcinogens messed up the mice stomachs so they ate less and got less cancer. The more you eat (of anything) the better your chances are of getting cancer. Eat drink and be merry, for tomorrow we die.

Interesting. I'd like to see what happens when this research gets reviewed for publication. Until then I wouldn't take it too seriously, it could be just a publicity stunt.

I've used acrylamide quite a bit in the lab, its well known as a potent neurotoxin.

On a mostly unrelated topic, did you know: the average human body contains a detectible amount of uranium, around 90 micrograms?

    Cripes...

If I only ate what was "healthy" for me, my diet would apparently consist of a few vegetables, and all the grass clippings I want.

Eat what you want... just do it in moderation. There's nothing wrong with a steak.. just don't have one every night. Same goes for almost anything else.

Sure, I might live to 110 by eating nothing but artichokes... but will it really be worth it? You only get one shot at life.. what's the point in skipping some of the better parts?

I'd rather live to 90, and have a few fries and cheeseburgers along the way.
And I found that hope and a lucky card
were all I had to walk with me...
