Thumbs down Ad-Aware being silently deleted

Calling the tactic "malware at its worst," Lavasoft said its privacy software is being silently deleted when users install a third-party multimedia player.

Newsbytes has confirmed that installing RadLight version 3.03 deletes Lavasoft's Ad-Aware program, as promised in a warning in the software's 1,100-word license agreement.

Ad-Aware is a free program designed to scan a PC for ad-supported software components or "spyware" and to remove them

So now my PC is going to become a software battleground? No thanks. Absolute bull****. Another piece of software which will never grace my PC. Feh.

Absolutely disgusting. Sleazy, slimy, and repulsive.

Anything for a buck, I guess. When you can't make money ethically, change the rules.

This kind of garbage is why I'm slowly migrating over to Linux. One of the benefits of open-source software is that you don't have to put up with this kind of garbage. It doesn't last long when people can see, and edit, your source code.

I installed AdAware on my system a while ago but ended up deleting it after it caused some problems. Do any of you use it and if so, do you like it?

I might download it again and try it once more. I just use RegCleaner to delete all of the spyware and I have some other programs as well.

I just saw at a LavaSoft mirror, http://www.lsfileserv.com, that they have an Ad-Aware update that fights RadLight.

EDIT: I just found this too: http://www.cexx.org/aureate.htm

I'm going to play with that when I get home tonight.

i've never used RadLight. good reason not to start.

that sucks though....i hate spy ware. a couple weeks ago, gator somehow got installed on my computer, and i still can't figure out how. i hadn't downloaded or installed anything recently, but suddenly this damned program is dragging down my systray.

so the handy "remove programs" function in win 2k actually did its job and removed it

Heh... wasn't there a program a little while back that contained spyware that didn't uninstall? When you uninstalled it, the program was removed, but it left the spyware behind, still active and functional...

I remember reading about it... but didn't pay too much attention, since I was already on Linux...

Wish I could remember which one it was...

The only problem I've had was that it identified a kazaa lite dll file, and i deleted it, causing my kazaa lite to stop working.. Besides that, its worked great for me.

Hmm... I have both installed and both work. I needed to get a separate player, because some of my older movies wouldn't play in media player for some reason.

The only think I can think of, is that RadLight is officially istalled, but Ad-Aware is not. I am using it from a previous install of windows, but it works fine.

You're suppose to leave that file. It's like a dummy file to track Kazaa...

Damn now companies are deleting software on our systems?! WTF.. Pisses me off! :mad4:

    Defeat Spyware!

Use Ad-Aware 5.8 (newest release). Also, if you're using IE, go get IE-Spyad. And if you really wanna block stuff.. try Proxomitron (proxomitron.org). Makes browers run a bit slower, but with a broadband connection you barely notice it.

If you've ever been hit by lop.com.. you'll find these tools INVALUABLE!
