Looking for ideas on a nice TV system.

Hello all... I'm have a question to ask for a friend of mine. Basically, she wants to get a nice TV and is looking to spend around 2K. What do you guys suggest that will give her the most bang for her buck (and nija... I do mean about TVs. )

depends on what she cares about. does she want a really big screen or does she want a really nice picture. if she wants a big screen with a good picture, ive seen 60" screens for under 2 grand. if she wants a really nice picture, go for a WEGA or an fd trinitron based set

She's only looking at the TV for 2k. She's probably not gonna want big screen because her place isn't big enough for her to sit far enough away from the TV. She definitely wants picture quality. Do any of you guys know good places to get WEGA? and what is an fd trinitron based set?

there's the xbr trinitron's...I've seen the 36"-ers for about 2k


usually 36 is the limit for tube tv's - beyond that, it's usually either over 2k or no longer a tube, but a rear projection tv.

SO, if you're getting a wega(or equivalent), and want to spend about 2k...look for the 36 inch hdtv monitors...

if it's not hdtv, you can actually get them for around 1k.


I got my toshiba 36af41 for 900 bucks. nice tv, I love it....

OH! and one more thing....does she move around a lot or anything like that?
because it's a pain in the butt to move (unless you serve that purpose )

She's probably not gonna move for another 2 years, and yeah I might serve that purpose, but she has a lot of male friends so she won't be screwed if I'm busy. Moving probably won't be a problem for her.

The 48" JVC i'art is excellent, definitely worth the look (you can find it at bestbuy, though it won't be adjusted properly). It even comes with a HDCP compliant DVI input. The Panasonic PT47WX49 is also a great choice when tweaked.

One thing you have to understand is with RPTV's, you MUST adjust and calibrate them before you're going to get a top notch picture. There's no way around it.

Actually there is. Your two choices are:

1. Get the TV calibrated
2. Stay ignorant (actually not a bad choice)

HDCP stands for high definition copy protection. It's a proposed encryption system for HD signals in a purely digital format. RPTV stands for rear projection television... basically what all the non-plasma TV's over 40" are.

You can calibrate it yourself, as shown in that website:

however, it might be easiler to get it calibrated by someone else. Of course, this is always the case, isn't it?

If you don't plan to get it calibrated, please do go around looking for a calibrated set. You really won't notice the flaws in yours until you see one that's better. I've jinxed myself this way many times. Sux.

Cool Thanks. I've got time this summer, so I'll look into learning how to calibrate it myself. Not nearly as much fun when someone else does it for you.
